Now I have Attention Deficit Disorder and am not ashamed of that fact. I was diagnosed way back in 3rd or 4th grade I think and am now currently in college. I still take the medication that is used in order to correct this disorder and a day ago or so a friend of mine claimed ADD was a hoax put on by greedy doctors. Personally I disagree because I can tell the difference between myself when I am and am not medicated. That doesn't necessarily prove that it is an actual condition I might just be crazy.

Those are very basic arguments which is where all of you come in. Fill me in on your thoughts.

Basically there is this connection in the brain that helps you retain your focus but if you have ADD that connection isn't made.

So usually its harder for people with ADD to do well because its harder to pay attention to any one topic. Its also hard to remember things that you were about to do, cause you get side tracked a lot.

That is my experience though so if you want a complete explanation I would look it up.

    Heres wiki's link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attention-deficit_hyperactivity_disorder

Well personally I really don't see ADD as a problem. Just something that I have

Is there a difference between ADD and ADHD? I've heard conflicting views on whether they're the same thing or not.
Also, I'd like to congratulate you on your openness and on the fact that you're not ashamed by it. Many people if they're told they've got some kind of disorder, no matter whether it's anorexia, bulimia, bipolar or ADD, would either try to deny it or cover it up and others would become deeply depressed or ashamed of it. Congratulations and well done, I imagine it would take a lot of courage to be so open about it.

First, the difference between Hyper and non hyper is really minimal as far as I can tell, cause I got ADD and my Bro has ADHD and he has stopped taking the meds. Actually the one difference I can think of is that ADHD effects emotions more openly than plain old ADD does.

On that note the medication that you take to correct these disorders is a depressant which does just that some times to.

Thanks for the congrats :D. To me its really not a big deal to share but then again I am more of an open person or so I have been told.

I never would have guessed that you have ADD, you're always so focused in your posts. I never knew there was a difference between ADD and ADHD, I though they were the exact same thing, just different names for it.

After looking at the wikipedia page, it's surprising that it said that about 5% of people under 19 have this disorder. That is much higher than I thought it would be. But being wikipedia, it could be wrong.

    According to wikipedia:
"The most common symptoms of ADHD are distractibility, difficulty with concentration and focus, short term memory slippage, procrastination, problems organizing ideas and belongings, tardiness, impulsivity, and weak planning and execution."

I have like, all of these...

    Out of those, I have:
    -distractibility
    -difficulty with concentration and focus
    -procrastination
    -problems organizing ideas and belongings
    -weak planning and execution

I must be closer to ADHD that I thought. Even if I did have it, my lifestyle seems perfectly fine.

    About the meds....

Do they work because they actually facilitate a chemical bond between neurons? Or do they work because you THINK they work?

There's well documented research on placebos. People are given hardened sugar crystals, and told they're pills for yadda-yadda-such-and-such. The people medicate themselves with sugar, and lo and behold, they're cured!!

Now, I'm by no means saying that the meds are sugar pills, but it is, always has been, and always will be mind over matter.

Ironically I have been in situations where I was given my medication but I was so close to just being asleep that I didn't recall it. And I could still tell that I was on the medication I just couldn't remember when I took it.

Also on a slightly funny note I have been in a situation like the previous but I actually remembered before I went to school so I took my meds again. Fortunately the only thing a double dose does is make everything very vibrant and for some reason everything turns to the right. ;D

Well to tell you the truth its more like 10% of all children (mostly male) under the age of 19 have ADD. That's what my doctor told me anyway last time I saw him which was a month or so ago.

Well are you sure about that? What are your resources? Or is this just an opinion, in which case it would still be valid but you still need some sort of backing for your claim.

I have like, all the symptoms of ADD and yet I've never been diagnosed with ADD. Most of the time's it's pretty hard to tell, actually. I had a couple friends who had ADD and I didn't know until they told me.

Well ADD isn't always the easiest thing to spot and the degree of ADD usually varies from person to person
