http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28050991?GT1=43001 Apparently Carter Bryant, the designer of Bratz, developed the concept while working for Mattel Toys Inc., and now Mattel is being awarded $10 million in copyright infringement, while MGA, the company that sells Bratz, now have to remove the dolls from store shelves. It's not exactly the reason I was hoping, but at least the outcome is the same: It's one less doll that's overtly teaching tween girls to be sluts. Thoughts?
No, the guy who desgined Bratz did so while working for Mattel, and all ideas he comes up with while working there are property of Mattel.
I saw that there was a law-suite about this, but never heard how it came out, until now. Though truthful, I find I care very little one way or the other. , I've always found it odd that companies own your ideas when you work for them. I understand the reasoning, but its still odd.
Horray, those abominations are finally removed from stores. I hated those things the moment I saw them on a TV commercial.
Hopefully never. Another thorn in the side of Mattel with the whole thing is that Bratz were the main competition for Barbie Dolls. Barbies are the lesser of two evils, so hopefully they'll stick with producing those instead of Bratz.
Dolls make me barf... I hate them, and how kids use their "imagination" with them. It just gives them weird thoughts to think about. And yes I agree, one less doll that's teaching girls to be §lütt¥.
Oh great, another war on things. Nothing about the bad parenting that turns girls into sluts, no it's the dolls. Just like video games turn boys into violent lunatics. So you people ever listen to what you say, or read what you write? Personally I don't care either way. It's Mattel who is benefiting from this suit and not the person who made the concept which kind of sucks, but that's how the corporate world works, you work for them and they own you and your ideas. I was never a fan of that concept, escpecially since some corporations lay claims to ideas you have in your free time. As for the dolls, they are toys, nothing more, nothing less. A toy isn't wholly responsible for making a person into something, it is parenting, or lack thereof, that guides the children (or doesn't in the case of the bad ones) If these dolls turn girls into sluts then its the parents fault for not teaching them restraint, and the parents fault for buying the dolls in the first place. We shouldn't be holding corporations responsible for parents being too lazy to instill some values in their kids.
I totally agree with BoP, things are always used as scapegoats for poor parenting, video games being the most obvious example because they're 'new', we shouldn't encourage blaming of the manufactors when they can only operate and make a profit from peoples purchases, if these dolls do 'teach girls to be slutty' then its as much society's problem.
