So, I was on escapistmagazine.com the other day, and their theme of the week was on the Canadian game industry. They had a few interesting stuff, but then the thought popped up in my head: There most certainly has to be a population of Natives in Canada, so, are there more Natives in Canada than there are in America? By "Native" I mean like, Native Americans, or Native Canadians in that sense. I'm sure disease affected the Native population in Canada as much as it did in the US, but did the government ever go on an extermination trip in Canada like it did in the US? From what I recall, the French and the British actually had a decent relationship with the Native population. So....are there more of them there than there are here?
You mean extermination trip as in the blankets with small poxs and other euorpean disease? I think that the french kept the blankets away from the natives but im not sure :S I would probably say that the native population is higher in Canada because of the slavery in the US (when slavery was still largely allowed) so most of the natives went to Canada.
Yeah, there are certainly natives in Canada. I doubt its more than in the states simply because of relative population, the fact that the canadian government didn't treat them all that much better and the nature of the climate. The most politically visible group of natives and the ones most almalgamated are the Inuit in the north (most likely because historically no one wanted to go up there), recently Canada made a 3rd territory called Nunavut, which is essentially run by the Inuit within the Canadian democratic system. There are of course other native groups scattered across the country, but they suffer the same problems as natives in the states, stuck in reservations, lack of traditional and modern resources, erosion of traditional culture, alcholism etc. You see natives sometimes in the cities, almost always downtown, in poorer areas or homeless.
I would say that the native of canada have a better life than those from US as the canada have think the US don't that help poor people like *bien-être social* who give money to people who don't have a job. (pssssit) i don't know if that all canada or only quebec
