And now for something less jolly about Christmas.
What's the situation with carol singers in your place and what do you think about it?
We used to have kids dressed up as various religious figures from Mary to devils, they were going house to house singing and they were given money for it. It was a nice tradition, especially if they had some nice costumes and sometimes some instruments.

But as I said, it used to be that way. Now in the spirit of commerce, kids just go home to home, "sing" as fast as they possibly can and stop the moment they get money. Some half an hour ago I've heard makeshift orchestra so it's not everyone, but frankly 90% of them. Just go, do their stuff get money and leave. I hate it, it's not even singing what they're doing, there's no creativity whatsoever, just one or two well known carols butchered again and again.

    Is it the same everywhere?

Where do you live Meee? Strangely enough, where I live there's no carol singers that go door to door. Is this the same in all parts of the West Coast?

Same situation here. Carolers this days have that "automatic switch off" where you give them money and they stop inthe middle of their song and walks away. They even sing songs that aren't even related to christmas.

we dont have carol singers in my country. Instead we have something thats called "røde kors" they help people in our country and in foreign countries. They often sing christmas song here in the christmas to cheer people op so they give them money. But some of them realy sing bad so they made a new concept: They made some bottles were there stands Give money or we sing :D

    Im sorry.

Here on the island where I live, certain people take advantage of the Christmas season under the guise of caroling. On the night before December 15th, we were preparing for my niece and cousin's combined birthday party. We were cutting up ginger, onions, and garlic for the marinade when suddenly this group of people drive straight up into my house, get out of their old Rav4 and start singing at us. They did not do this to any other house on my street and my house has a fairly large yard.

What they did is they saw that we were active over here and targeted us. My nino ended up giving them money just so they could go away. It was really weird and completely random. That was the first time we ever had carolers on this street. EVER!

I did not appreciate what they did and I am sure neither of you will have appreciated it too. I felt that it was extremely rude to just drive into someone's family gathering, take everyone's attention away from their task by going into the car port and start singing.

    That is weird, Imagine.

As for me, I've never seen carolers here in ottawa. Mind you, I wouldn't expect them this Winter. it's been bastardly coldm and the snow banks are taller than me. I'm 6 feet. Odd, because last winter we had a green Christmas. Meh.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and there's no carol singers. Mostly they're afraid of getting shot, but I live in a rich, good neighborhood with a -20% crime rate. Maybe people are lazy.

Both. They sound interesting to someone who's never experienced it before. You see, my neighborhood's a bit boring.

The traditional singing is nice, especially when they have some creative costumes and accessories (they used to have scythes to scare children ;D), but nowadays it's annoying at best.
