I am going to the summer olympics in debating and general knowledge in Shanghai this summer. My question is: Would carrying my top hat (and cane) be offensive to the Chinese authorities or not? You know... with China being 'communist' and all...
Well, since they have a free market and a class based society, I don't think they'd be offended by someone pretending to be rich. The whole communist thing... they aren't pulling it off very well =/ I'd definitely support that it wouldn't be offensive, but you may get some funny looks from them, as a top hat and cane don't seem like casual attire in China.
a top hat and a cane? seriously, what for? just wear a suit. i doubt people would be offended, they'd just look at you funny. kinda the same if you did it here, to be honest. shanghai is a pretty major business hub and they see people dressed in all sorts of international style. but man, something that's a hundred years out of date? i dunno.
You wouldn't need to go to China to get funny looks. This anachronistic style might be your current thing but I doubt you'll get many compliments.
