Congratulations on winning the StarCraft Battle Chest.

I would have voted for yours except for a few reasons
    1) Simple Procedural textures - I have a personal dislike for procedural textures when they are pretty basic (chrome, blue, red, etc...)
    2) Design was more collage like then an actual full scene - Ground texture is very plain, turret and Tempest seem to be from different renders. Maybe they aren't but thats how it looks
    3) I dislike the turret design and color - red just does not go well with it and it does not look very metallic
    4) Lighting could be better - the sky background you chose is an orange/red sunset, the tempest is chrome, not matching the lighting conditions with the sky you choose is sloppy. Same with the missile firing from the turret. There should be light from the fire behind the missile lighting up the area around the missile turret. While there is light on the turret itself, the light on the ground is absent and makes it look sloppy.
    5) The background sky is washed out - it's a sunset and yet it doesn't feel like a sunset. It feels like a very large billboard someone put up behind a model.
    6) The background sky doesn't have the right perspective - it just sort of goes behind the mountains but not like a sky should - see comment 5.

Of course most people do not see these things because most people think modeling in 3D is super hard and anyone who can make a pretty basic scene is super cool. I don't even like my scout a whole lot and if I had really wanted to win I would have done something like Carrier Battlegroup 7 or Battlecruiser Patrol or Terran Fleet or even Wraith Attack Run... (see my deviant art).

I'm not saying this because I lost, I'm saying this because you have much room for improvement. I could buy the battle chest with the amount of money I make in 1 hour at my job, winning this competition was not of any importance to me.

Of course he has room to improve (I mean the kid prolly just finished the advanced Maya course at U of M), but all your criticism above is really all your dislikes and calling everything sloppy. I personally think it looks like and feels like a sunset, and I think everyone else seems to think so too. You don't need to be a graphics designer to think that the turret looks metallic or red is the right color for the turret. I think most people can see these things. You don't need to be an artist to be able to look, critique, and enjoy a painting.

Maybe he didn't really put much work into it... I mean it's just an artwork contest on these forums.

::) And I'm sure you don't think having the most posts and minerals and becoming a legend is not of any importance either.

Sorry I have to pick on you, but it just irks me sometimes that you get way too serious over things that are not really too important to you anyways.

Seriously brain teasers are just for fun!

FlyingTiger, you stole my thoughts. I am a regualar on this forum and I always read what other people have to say but never feel a need to comment, which is why I have zero post count. But yes, paragon seems arrogant and way too self-confident. I have seen him display this behavior in other threads. To Paragon, Im not trying to turn this thread into a flame towards you, because you usually do have valuable posts, but try not to come off with so much confidence in the future.

Raise your hand if you've done digital art for the larger part of 10 years... anyone? anyone?
From the results of the contest archlimit could very well think that he is really really good which is not the case. I'm not even really really good and I've been doing it for a long long time. Maybe he doesn't think he's really really good. Either way, he has lots of room to improve and if nobody tells him, he won't improve near as quickly. This is also for everyone else so that they can better see what really goes into all of this. I knew mine would not win after he submitted his scene because everyone likes scenes and I just posted a single object that I did over a year ago. And I didn't want to throw around the big guns in some little forum contest.

Hi everyone! I'm sorry but I didn't even see this thread until this morning, apparently it's been on for a few days. Thanks for taking the time out to create the post/comment on them.

I do take into account your critique, Paragon. I admit full on that I didn't notice such strong reflectivity on the Tempest's frame until 2 hrs into the render, haha. And I WASN'T gonna re-render it. Overall, the piece could have been better for various reasons including the ones you've provided. If you would like to take a look at my other works, you can visit my website link found in my member's profile. (A personal message would be nice, I don't believe that it's necessary to make it a thread. I understand that you might have done it with the intent of allowing other's to offer their opinion as well, but I'm sure they could just send me a PS themselves if they strongly enough about it.)

As for everyone else's comments, thank you very much, and I'm really glad you like my work and taking a stance for your opinions. I'm going to be submitting for the forum header competition, and I'll be doing more hand drawn work. Tired of dragging vertices and rendering, hehe. Hope to see some more great work from all of you as well.

    Thanks again.

You should post more man! Let's hear your insights and ideas on SC2! ^_^

yea I definetly agree. Paragon has some great ideas and well thought out statements but making this thread was a tiny bit far. Oh well nothing really to fret about, but someone had to speak up.

    haha silly Nikzad

I generally never post because 90% of the topics are all specualtion and theories. I like to reply to facts. Also people usually already post what I want to say and I do not like repeating others... but I guess I will try to become more active :)

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for lookin' at my stuff, I really appreciate that. Yea, I've just been pullin' stuff together all summer, cuz I'll be a senior next year and I'm kinda wiggin' out over needing to improve or be "good enough" for the market, I guess.

The work I did/am doing for this forum is just to sort of practice up on my work in various mediums as well as provide some appealing images for a group of people that love the same thing I love. So it's all good!
