thinking of playing this game/time sink. Looks very interesting to me.

Just some questions, and of course we can use this thread to discuss the game:
    -have you played it?
-house rules, what's usual here, what are you used to
-3rd edition sounds more interesting then 4th edition to me. Is it still widely played?
-what characters do you enjoy playing
-whats the deal with prestige classes
    -how much roleplaying is usual

I first believe D&D was for "Dupont et Dupond".

Ah jeez, it's been so long since I've played; I probably remember about as much as you know. Let's see here...

I have played it, and I wish I had started earlier because college has spread my regular group of friends all over the East Coast.

House Rules...When playing with my friends we'll usually just follow what's in the various manuals, though occasionally we'll bend a few for the sake of the game.

It seems to be the 3rd Edition vs 4th Edition situation is comparable to Windows XP vs Windows Vista/7. That's not to say 4th edition is bad; IIRC my friends and I got a lot more done in a lot less time. I think what people like about 3rd Edition is that none of the rules are set in stone, so players can tweak the game to their liking. Hell, I've seen libraries of (actually quite balanced) player-made classes.

Characters, now this is the part I remember. Virtually every game I played some sort of Striker class Rogue or Ranger. Now that I think about it, a lot of our encounters were like Diablo - we'd get zerg'd at by 3-4 monsters for each player. Most of the time our teams would be multiple strikers and one tank. It sounds suicidal, but we would usually push through okay. The few times we had a Controller or Leader of some kind, we found it convenient, but by no means necessary.

How much roleplaying really depends on who you're with. When I'm playing with my friends, it's more of a subconcious thing; we use less word contractions, maybe take on an accent, etc. However, this is only when we're talking with a NPC or something. When we're talking amongst ourselves, travelling, or battling, the roleplay is virtually nonexistent

IIRC, Prestige Classes are delt the same way as any other class one would have when multiclassing, however they have certain requirements you must meet before taking them. Essentially, it means you can't prestige class from level 1, but you can multiclass from level 1. Considering that multiclassing means you can never have your main class at level 20 (the levels are split evenly among each additional class you take on), Prestige classes can be a great way to get the abilities you want without having to take on a billion different classes.

I've never played the actual tabletop game, but I've played a bunch of things based off the same system (classes, damage system, campaigns) and I absolutely love it.
