Do video games cause a decrease in how much someone cares about world events?

I used to look at a variety of news sites every day and I could give detailed descriptions of what was going on in the world. I stopped when StarCraft 2 was announced and when I started playing World in Conflict.

Also, none of my friends cared about what was going on in the world so I had nobody to talk to about it.

For example, I assume we are still in Iraq and that there are still no plans to leave. This information is about 2 months old though so maybe that changed.
I assume there is still a resurgence of Taliban in Afghanistan but I don't know. Maybe we beat them again? Again, 2 month old information.

I'll probably start again when school starts back up because I rarely play video games then and spend more time looking at the news or spending time with friends, etc...

I still stay connected to the world at large, mostly through various groups I'm in on MySpace ( )

 

Public radio to and from work, Slashdot, StumbleUpon. Sometimes I accidentally find myself watching the crappy news on TV. I get tons of news, in fact, a large portion of my waking day is spent going through articles and stuff... although it is more along the lines of science and tech development, since politics generally disgusts me.

 

not really. its still up to the person. and it also depends on the kind of game he/she is in.

 

The news is kind of important to my job, so I stay in touch. Still, I find games to be a lot more fun than finding out what the latest reporter’s opinion is, especially since the number of doctored photos has increased to roughly once a week in major newspapers...

 

before this site, I spent my day on bbc.co.uk

it's a refreshing change from Fox *hurl* and CNN *hurlhurl*

the things that make front page on bbc.co.uk don't even make it into the new on TV sometimes

 

When I do look at the news I look at cbsnews.com and bbc.co.uk as well as some other random ones every so often.

What is your job?

 

It's a matter of personal interest, people who stopped lookin' to the news because of a game were probably never really interested.

Eh, I still stay preety up to date on news. I mostly get a bunch of my news from my Blackberry though, I dislike watching CNN...they just keep reporting the same crap over and over again. Maybe ill check out the site Nikzad said.

 

True, I hate watching american news channels too, a while ago they kept reporting hours about that fucking paris hilton debate... Gross.

Haha, yeah that was annoying. Also, when Ford died, they kept reporting it for like a month!! All this talk about Paris Hilton and junk and hardly anyone in America knows about the UK/Russia showdown going on. Hehe...i guess its American television

 

I used to work at Dunkin Donuts (a coffee and donuts place for those of you who aren't familiar) and we had two TVs on 24/7 on CNN

All they reported was Anna Nicole Smith, Paris Hilton, and random shows that it should be a crime to call news

There was this one show called Something's Anatomy...it may have been Jay or Gupta or Patel...but basically it was a reality TV show about a surgeon and interns trying to get a job or something...I don't remember the specifics because I was too busy serving coffee to old people

But seriously, CNN should change its name - Cable News Network has become very misleading

 

It's more of a gossiping channel these days. Dutch and Uk news are better

 

Not really. It's news for people who are only interested in TV shows that are on cable TV. Not people who are actually interested in the world events.

eh not really. unless it was something BIG. like that "bird flu" thing. or some other world dangers.

gaming has never effected me reading the paper lol.
