What do you guys think? I was surfing the net (haha that sound's funny), and came across a few websites opposing the consumption of dog meat. Of course these websites were filled with idiots making remarks such as; "Barbaric Asians!" "Don't buy Asian products anymore!" "They're monsters!" So I decided to come here to have a mature discussion. I think it's funny how I have to turn to a gaming forum for a mature discussions rather than sites dedicated to the issue. Personally, I believe dog meat is completely fine under certain circumstances. I understand how some people would dislike it since canine's have earned a respectful position, however, I don't believe nor do I agree to criticize a culture based on certain dish. What I do agree on is the way some dogs are killed, kept caged and miserable to be stoned to the head. In fact, this applies to any animal to me since American slaughter houses are worse. But to call a country barbaric is WAY out of the question. Would I eat it? Yeah I would. Not as a daily meal, but as something I'd try once or a few times in my life. PS. I heard a few places in Canada can sell dog meat if they have a license?
I've heard it's rather tough and stringy. Anyways. There's nothing morally wrong with it in my opinion. We eat cows, pigs, deer, chicken, whatever. If we eat all those, why not a dog? The only convincing argument I've heard against it is that dogs are supposedly more intelligent than most game animals. But, as I said, that's the only good argument I've heard.
First of: "those barbarians!" Just to keep the extremists here of my back. We have one dog. -The second died recently, kinda broke my mind for a while, still does to be honest.- So my opinion might be biased, but still has a point. To the point: you said that you would be willing to try it sometime. What if it turns out to be the best thing you have ever tasted? Would you put it on your regular menu or not? Also: what do you meam by American slaughterhouses being even worse? What can be worse then stoning a creature to death? I have little knowledge of the American laws on this, but I assume they use the same as Europe does. -Cows get a huge stick through their brains, killing them instantly, pigs are electrocuted on the head and chickens, erm, no idea. Forgot that.- Anyway, I would never eat it. Just seams wrong to me.
If it's the best thing I've tasted, I can suppress it. There are many good things I've tasted but stopped myself from further eating. It's all just a matter of control. PS. The living conditions for cows are putrid. I live in CA and travel around a lot, I pass by the farms quite often. Cramped, unclean, smelly. Opposed to some other farms in other countries where the cattle receive massages, beer, and acres to run.
It seems wrong because I have lived in the same house with dogs for over a decade now. We gave them names, spend whole days with them. It would be like, eating a member of your family. Or at least a close friend. Not because I have been told to, I just love my dog. I use a picture of him as my wallpaper ffs. Would you set a steak as your wallpaper? I think giving a creature a name and having feelings for it causes people not wanting to eat it. Just pure psycology. -no spell check, eh- The same thing goes for people who have dog fights. They give them no names, lock them up all day and have no feelings for them. Really cruel to say, but just keeping it real: maybe if I lived over there I would eat it. You would simply not know any better there.
I see where what you're thinking. I own 4 dogs myself, and one of my favorite dogs died a couple of years ago due to old age. I suppose I can accept the dog eating as well as owning dogs because I've experienced small farm life by staying over at relatives. You would befriend a few chickens and your parents wouldn't kill that one. But the others would be used to food. Similar to how, I wouldn't eat my dog or someone else's if it became a family member. I suppose its just personal experience, so yes, I understand what you're saying. But it still doesn't give the right for some people to call others barbarians and heathens based on their culture and something they don't understand.
I don't really have a problem with eating animals I haven't befriended. It seems cold, but we need food. I have a friend whose parents own a chicken thing. -for the eggs- Over 20000 chickens there. They used to have tamed chickens there along with the others. They never ate those, so I see what you mean.
My thoughts? Never eat your pet's meat. I never eat Rabbit meat even though it's legal, I'd try duck meat... it's pretty tough to eat. Horse meat, Noooo... cause it's too big Cow meat??? I never eat "raw" unless it's a steak. *tongue* Yes my opinion it is Immoral and wrong to eat dog meat... because I'm a muslim... I can't touch dog nor eat it. and it's wrong and cruel to eat your own pet for your satisfaction. That's my simple explanation and 2 cent about it.
I'm not morally opposed to eating a dog, I just might be disgusted. Like when you eat a small octopus and all of it's organs are in there. I just think about all that hair I could be eating. Well there's nothing wrong for eating a cultural dish. I agree with Fenix. We eat all those other animals, why shouldn't we eat dogs? Just because people think of dogs as more intelligent? Aren't pigs pretty intelligent too?
I don't think I would since I like dogs, but it's not immoral. Yet, that depends on your personal views. Like Fendi said, he thinks it's immoral because thats what Muslim's believe. I don't know what the Christian stance on dogs is, but I see nothing wrong with eating them.
I don't think it's wrong at all unless it was your pet that you took care of for awhile. A dog is an animal like any other that we consume, and it is a part of nature for creatures to consume other creatures. What is wrong though is how some asian cultures treat the dogs they consume, for example they will hang them upside down by a rope from a high place and beat them alive with any blunt objects they can find because they beleive it brings luck and makes the dog meat more tender.
I never tried it before. But i wouldnt mind =P. As long as any animal is killed instantly without any pain, i wouldnt mind eating it.
That makes no more sense than worrying about eating feathers at KFC. Anyway, i don't think the act is immoral, the treatment of them is the real issue, like it's been said, however by eating them you're fueling the industry that does the cruelty which i guess could be immoral *if the animal was treated that way and you're aware of it*, that's not to say the 'west' is a shining example of how to treat animals, we definitely need to do something about treatment of chickens (for larger companies and that) and feed the industries that advocate that en mass. :/ I doubt i could though, i'm too much of a dog person.
Oh Eon, I think in both Christian and Muslim believe that treat your own pet like your own (I don't know where I read it but I think it's in the Bible and Koran somewhere).
I personally wouldn't because I'd probably think of how good companions dogs are. I have no problem with others eating it. But I wouldn't be able to. I mean... it's dog.
Thats just how we are raised in the West, opposed to some countries in the East that eat dog, its a common thing there and isn't a big deal because that is how they are raised in their culture. Similar to tribes and cultures in other places that eat insects and bats etc. I bet if you were raised there instead, you would have no problem with it at all, it's just perspective and how you are raised. A dog is no different than any other animal that we eat such as cow, chicken, etc. The only thing that is different is that here we have them as pets and it's considered strange or wrong to eat them in our culture. You have to look at it different points of view.
