I decided to play some against the AI on Insane just to see if this could help me improve. I've only played a few matches, all of them P v Z. The problem is, I'm getting raped. The AI is better than any person I've ever played. Is this a bad way to get better? Is there some advantage to the Insane AI that I'm not getting or is it just really really fast with perfect macro and whatnot?

You aren't crazy - the Insane AI actually cheats. It gets an extra couple of minerals per trip per worker (7 compared to 5) and doesn't need to scout. So it knows everything you do and has a better economy by default. I played with a buddy against one Insane AI and we were able to beat it, but even then it was difficult.

It probably is a very good way to get better since you have to play perfectly and do some out-microing tactics to beat the insane AI.

Playing the Insane AI is a good way to see if you can beat an opponent that has the advantage on you as the computer does in insane mode. Sometimes when you play PvP the other person has the advantage on you to. If you can manage to beat the AI with the advantage it can only help your skillz when you are playing someone else with an advantage. I would say at the very least it will improve you macro/micro skills cause you ain't beating the Insane AI with click building ;)

Haha no wonder. I held them off for like the first 20 minutes, then after a really close battle I'm like ok time to rebuild...........and 70 more units came around the corner. lol

its good practice because it is a simulation of a situation where your opponent is ahead of you, such as they killed several of your workers at the beginning of the game. Its a good way to train your gameplay to catch up and fending off heavy pressure.

    destroy its economy

    Hi Guys,

I have been playing against insane AI for a few weeks and i have found out that is only one way how to destroy this enemy. If you are able to survive its first massive attack perform the counterattack immediately. Do not use ground forces. Use the air-ground forces(void ray) to destroy its probes, drones, scvs. Although the insane AI has a economical advantage it is still pretty stupid. If you start destroying its mining forces with long range weapons such as void ray, he starts to be confused and "forget" to fight and expand. So you have some additional time to rebuild your army (you probably lost almost all ground forces during the first attack) and finish it off. This tactics should work for every fraction. I am sure that you can find an alternative force to void ray in every fraction.

(sorry for my poor English, i am not a native speaker.)

Don't do PvT. -.- IT will get up a rediculous amount of Marines and Mars really quick and you'd be extremly hard pressed to outdo it.

    pressure

if you keep applying pressure early and being able to survive it, thats the key to beating an insane ai. i usually play with toss and what i like to do is place cannons right on top of a ramp and place about 7 or 8 colossus behind them. by the them it takes the ai to reach the colossus, they will be long dead. i also support them with immortals and stalkers.

I don't think it's a good way to train. SC2 is about learning and practicing builds. Against insane AIs you can't learn and practice the builds that are effective against human players really. If anything is good to practice against, it's probably the very easy AI or the very hard AI. The very easy AI just does nothing so you can practice your build and refine it. The very hard AI makes strong pushes, but somewhat more along the lines of what a human player's all-in might look like...so you could practice your build and see if you can hold off the pressure. Like maybe a 2gate robo and see if you can stop a strong MM push early on. Ideally you would get a strong human opponent to practice against and tell him or her to do X build. The other route is theoretical...just study the game and timings to the point where you're fairly confident you can pull off a defense, and then do random matches until you run into that situation in a real game and review how it ends up.

I play 2v2 cooperative against insane A.I. and i have to say that the only thing that makes you better than it is micro..push your micro skills at their limits and you'll see that you can make big damage to the A.I.
first key point is to make a good rush on their minerals and then the critical spot is to defend on their first attack which will be with a massive land army...
Then in the Whole game, whatever other things you do,you MUST always have some air-to-land units bothering their mineral lines..that's where you'll see how stupid even the Insane A.i. is..you hit some workers,he takes them away and you hit their center building,he brings All his army on the minerals, you go back where he can't hit you, then his army goes back where he was without leaving someone to protect the minerals, you go in again and that keeps happening until you have killed all his workers and his main building.
Be carefull and make a great scouting every time because insane A.I. makes a LOT of expansions

I know how to beat A.I. as Terran. Build a wall, mass up siege tanks, siege behind the wall, and let their army run into them. mwuahaha

You should face real players if you want to get good against real players. A.I. does not do any sneaky plays like drops or DT rushing. I guess it is a good way to test your speed and play faster though.

Though rarely, AIs do do drops and DT rushes...

    *sigh*

As for the topic, I only intend to do the bare minimum for achievements... the insane AI is pathetic. It's basically a desperate attempt at a good AI but Blizzard realised they can't code that so they made them use cheats... cool.

For training purposes, very hard AI is perfectly fine. I play against them to get used to new hotkeys and groups, etc.

I just beat the insane ai as Terran vs Zerg. It required numerous saves and restarts. From the replay I saw that the Zerg rapidly expands at a rate that I could not match. Basically he had every other expansion while I had two, and fought over a 3rd. AI maxes out their army and basically had unlimited resources, (30,000-40,000 at the games end) The only way to beat it was to not lose many units. It was a siege tank/Viking/wraith build with an early planetary fortress at the main entrance ramp and a bumper with marauders I would need to replace after every rush. Heavy units would get mc'ed by infestors so they were useless, but siege tanks kept far back enough would decimate there maxed out army. Sacrificial scvs would help keep up tanks and PF. Vikings would be used to lure the ai towards the tanks as opposed to letting them come in for a direct attack with their hydralisks.

When there was a break in their attack I used the wraithes to knock out their buildings and would run as soon as the army neared. Sensor towers helped to keep tabs on army. Without the push they would keep zerging and replenishing. After their stationary defenses were out I went after their over minds. This was the novice sands map. Slow speed helped to allow some micro.

Essentially I used the ai tendency to pull back the army when. Their base is attacked and run back into their forward position then you leave. Without the saves it would be impossible for me.

Now tried against Protoss and was crushed by an army of colossus. I will try again with a siege tank/ PF/wraith/Viking build. Pushing early for heavy Vikings. I can already see that it will be harder than against Zerg though.

It was instructive though. Beating them requires flawless play, and going to last good saves when you've lost too many units in a battle you weren't prepared for. Use decoys to lure the ai towards your tanks!
