I'm thinkin tonite, as I'm apt to do when I should be sleeping, and I come up with an idea. It's a class-based action (Think Battlefront or TF2) slash RTS. It'd work for any RTS, but let's use SC as an example. So, you have two options to choose from at the beginning of the level/match. Option one: Control the battle, en masse, as an unseen commander, controlling your massive armies with mad microing skillz. OR Go front line, choose your class, and turn the tide of the war with your bare hands/guns/claws/psionic appendages. In the action mode, all buildings would be enterable, so you could go in and sabatoge stuff (I hate to keep using other games as an example, but kinda like entering starships in SW:BF II) The advantage would be stuff like slower production times, increased mineral cost, but all repairable by SCV. The tradeoff for stuff like this is if your opponent decides to go Overlord mode, he'll be able to focus his massive armies on YOU alone, whilst you can only come to bear, say, five people in your squad. So....Yea? Nay? STFU+GTFO?
I think it's feasible, and it's not crazy... just... I mean how do you even BEGIN to implement a system like that? It would be daring and a huge risk, but I suppose it could be done. The problem is that even if it did would it even create THAT great a game? Maybe.
I don't see how it would be hard to do. Granted, you'd need stronger computers than the mainstream market currently has, but it could be done. Grunt mode, you'd have certain objectives to complete, or you could just kill all your foes, as a human is better than a computer (Hopefully). Overlord mode, you just play like a regular RTS, with the added challenge of stopping your foe from completing the objectives. Multi (With three+) could get a bit odd I suppose, but still doable.
Savage anyone? While not exactly the same as your idea, it does mix RTS with FP/TP the way one player is commander doing the macro and others are units. The main difference I see is that commander in Savage can only use some workers and all other units are controlled by other players
its a good idea but definitely not worth ones time playing against a human opponent coz technically results cannot be altered with one unit, unless its a hero type and in SC world theres no space for heroes during PvP perhaps its a rather fun feet if it will be possible during campaign mode and for heroes only... since controlling a zergling is pointless anyways when in war you already know your fate that you'll mostly probably die in 1 or 2 hits from someone lolz,,,,
that sounds crazy awesome. I've always wanted to go down there and shred me some zerglings. on the other hand, i dont really wanna be targeted by lets say a battlecruiser fleet and be yamato'd to death. Aren't you suggesting making starcraft2 and starcraft ghost one game?
This idea works. In fact, it's already (sort of) been implemented. You need to check out Battlezone. It's an old RTS/FPS. I mean really old...but it was AWESOME. It was more FPS but you had base building, unit command etc. You could build a radar station, then zoom out to an RTS type view. It fits the description quite well. I even have a link to a NOCD installer that a group of crazy dedicated fans setup. They even maintain a server for it, and are working (or done with) a graphics update/new campaign mod. Download Just stay away from the sequel. Pandemic ****ed that one up. This formula ROCKS if they do it right. Key word IF. If you are interested in learning more, these guys are the best. Battlezone Club It isn't exactly what you described, but it blends RTS and FPS rather well.
Oh Battlezone... The game I like the most, after Starcraft. I played a lot online, I was good but nowadays there aren't many people up there, or I am looking for servers at wrong time
There is only one server, though usually it is being used. Look at BZ club they have the server data file. Glad to see someone else has actually played this epic game!
