in the old one, it was 12 units, making it hard to send more then 12 units to attack unless you wanted an all out attack. how many can you select this time, like 20? edit: i'm changing this, it's now also about the unit caps
Re: How many units can you select? 50!! It's very common that i have 120 zerglings and 100 hydralisks in my base ready for a mass kill anytime!! and i want to be able to just send them out ALL AT ONCE instead of clicking clicking clicking
Re: How many units can you select? If you go by the size of the selection table in the demos, I would say the limit is 49. According to this article, however: http://pc.ign.com/articles/790/790158p1.html the selection cap has been lifted, so we'll just have to see how they work that into the standard StarCraft interface.
Re: How many units can you select? 49 units is a HUGE improvement. I always found myself limited by 12 units in the original. And if it is liften entirely, even better! I won't have to group all my units and then order attack eah group. hoorah!
Re: How many units can you select? i never really thought about the restriction of 12 units... maybe cos i'm a protoss player. think of it this way. 12... zealots? pretty good. 12...dragoons? pretty good too. 12...dark templars? woot. 12...high templars? hmm. that's 6 archons! woot woot. 12...reavers? WOOT! 12...scouts? hmm. still passable. 12...corsairs? that's... i don't know, how many disruption webs to cover the entire base? 12...arbiters? that's damn useless, i'd rather use them singularly. 12...carriers? WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT! so 12 isn't really a bad number for protoss... zerg maybe. 12 zerglings' pathetic. 12 hydralisks can still be considered. the only thing that really makes a point here is 12 ultralisks... or some other stuff i left out. cos that's the point. zerg are MEANT to mass rush. they're free food, for goodness sake. dangerous free food when they come in massive droves.
Re: How many units can you select? I love the selection thing in Age of Empire: Age of Kings and the Conquerers. You could select a rather large amount of units, it automatically grouped like units alike, AND if gave you like four different formations for moving. And the formations actually mattered!!!
Re: How many units can you select? Formations make total sense. They should implement this! Also, I kind of find it annoying how when ranged units attack, they start attacking immediately from their furthest range, and the rest who want to attack how to run around and find an opening they can squeeze into to shoot. Why don't the front marines nudge forward a little so that we can get 2 or 3 rows of firepower?
Re: How many units can you select? as long as you can select more than 12 ill be happy even if its just 13
thread change so what do you think the unit caps will be now? somewhere in the 400s,a t the least, is my guess
There are speculaions that the unit cap will be increased to 300. However it's likely that Blizzard will change the supply used by each unit to counteract this increase. They said they "wanted players to exercise more strategies and tactics when sending out an army of units, rather than just mass out crazily and flood the opponent with simple units" So that could possibly mean the attack power and HP of Protoss will increase, but it'll also be harder to mass on protoss units. Whereas Zerg's attack power and HP might decrease, but it's easier to mass on zerg units.
Re: How many units can you select? Well, in AoE, the most interesting formation was the box. It stuck the melee units on the outside, surrounding the archers, which in turned surrounded the weakest units, the monks, which were the spell casters. I think this would do quite well in SC. Imagine, Zealots ringed around Dragoons, who are protecting the High Templar at all costs!
in starwars:galactic battlegrounds, you could make formations. they were very useful. i cant remember specifics, its been 6+ years since ive played that game. i just remember useful formations.
I agree, but I don't see myself using formations, not very SC-ish in my opinion. Except to look amazing having marines in circle formation fending off zerglings! I too dislike how marines stop as soon as they get in range, they pretty much get interrupted right when the enemy takes a step back. Aslo, 49? Why not just 50
yes. 300 units more. this is what ive been hoping for. i hope they do increase the max unit count. yes simple and mostly tier 1 and 2 units and none expensive units. this is the problem of starcraft 1 (well professional gamers dont really care about this etc.) i hope battlecruisers(with the upgrades), thors, warp rays, etc will be useful in most games(maps).
That's why I strongly oppose rushes less than 15mins into the game. Battle scenes involving lots of Battlecruisers and Warp Rays are a lot more fun and interesting than battles involving 4 zerglings and 8 SCVs.
i know how to counter those rushes specially the annoying bunker rush. im talking about the bunker rush where your opponent place bunkers near your minerals(usually at the back.) early in the game and 95% of the time you will lose if you did not notice it quickly. full circle is a good place to this "cheap" shot. hide your scv left or right side of the enemy base far enough where they wont see it. then start making 1-3 marines and build bunker at the side of enemy minerals. quite annoying. so heres my idea to counter it in starcraft 2. 1st option increase the sight radius of the main base (nexus, hatchery, and command center). big enough that you can see enemy approaching specially those who are planniong to build near your territory. 2nd option All main bases should be able to attack. like nexus firing photon canon energy spheres etc. this option will be the END of all rushes (well early rushers for sure.). anyway i think option 1 is enough just to not take the fun of rushes(zerglings rush etc.). i just HATE the cheap bunker strategy specially in small maps. i always do it tho. 100% imba against noob, not even giving them any chances to fight back. i just hate the setting / mechanics of the current battle net for starcraft because 50% of the time you fight either a noob or against a player far better than you. =/
If they do have formations, I hope they'll allow a few custom one's. That would take so much of the pointless micro out of it. I hated when the vulnerable units like the medics would charge the front line. A formation could finally keep them in the middle or back, where they should be. Better yet, spaced between units. But formations don't seem very starcraft-ish.
i heard in a magazine that they were working on have no limit to the amount of units you can select. I also heard the same thing from somewhere else. I cant provide references but i swear i saw it and im pretty sure thats what theyre gonna go with unless they have said more recently that they scrapped that idea. Is my info outdated or have you guys not seen it?
Currently there is no unit selection limit. Also currently, they want to have "about the same" amount of population max, so probably 200-250.
