    somewhere....not sure
So i was surfing the net and was bored so i browsed through some zombie games, resident evil and silent hill movies...
after that i went to bed to sleep, it was 7:30 when i crashed in bed. I woke up at 12:30am for no reason, so i got a glass of water. As i lied back down to bed and was supposed to close my eyes, i thought about the zombies and demons i saw earlier while surfing. My imagination begins to kick in, i was imagining I'm kicking zombie a$$, and yes i was still awake, while imagining i closed my eyes but still imagining, I was fending them off one by one, and yes, i was still awake. While i was fending them off, the arms of the zombies got detached from their bodies (and yes I'm imagining), and one by one the arms started to crawl at me and i was taken down... Suddenly (in the real world) i got paralyzed, i cant move my eyes, i was wide awake and my eyes were open! I cant move everything! Whilst still imagining that i was mauled by the arms, i felt like in reality, there was something pounding on my chest continuously in different places. I cant move and i was struggling... finally i got a hold of my senses and i forcefully moved myself, and i did, and all this happened while my eyes were open and wide awake... i was shocked and in awe...

and so being an indifferent person... i didn't feel anything... i went back to sleep.
since after reaching 12 and having lots of crappy experiences and crappy emotions, i had suppressed dreams, no dreams at all.

    Anyone explain why this happened?

(OMG! my first small wall of text! Bonus 100 minerals! any care to give me the bonus? LOL)

It happens a lot. It means that certain parts of your brain are still asleep, while others, such as the capacity to think (Though usually not too rationally) are beginning to wake up. It can be quite a shock to people who've never experienced it before. It happens to me all too often.

Yeah, I once kinda was semi-asleep, just kinda waking up in the middle of the night and I freaked out when I couldnt move anything, I was so scared to death, but then it was like nothing has happened.

Yeah this happens to me occasionally when I am either really tired or right when I wake up.

Medically what is happening is your body is falling into REM sleep before normal sleep (in your case) or staying in REM upon waking up (like in my case). REM sleep (Rapid-Eye-Movement) is the most important stage of sleep, characterized by a specific type of brain wave. In this stage of sleep, your brain is randomly firing neurons. As a result, the body 'paralyzes' itself (could you imagine what would happen if you randomly fired neurons while being able to move!).

So basically, what is happened to you is you fell into REM sleep before regular sleep, but since you were semi-conscious you realized you were unable to move. It is a very freaky feeling.

You randomly fall over? That's not a good thing - you should get yourself checked out by a doctor.

Actually, I think it is sleep paralysis that he was suffering from. If memory serves, when you fall asleep, you dream and normally you would move around. To counter act this, the tip of your brain is given a bit of a chemical that induces paralysis in your limbs. However, people who suffer from sleep paralysis wake up and the chemical is still paralyzing them. They also have other sleep things, such as dreaming also continuing for a bit. So, while they are fully conscious, part of their brain hasn't woken up and they are paralyzed and their worst dreams seem like a reality, which it technically is, to the sleeping part.

Now that I think about it, the t.v. program i watched this on had a lot of people withs stories like yours. One guy claimed to wake up paralyzed, had a demon drag him out of bed and around the house. However, the the next thing he knew he was back in bed, feeling like he was tackled by a 300 lb. linebacker. Sounds similar.

I don't think this is something to joke about, Alasdair.

I was told somewhere that if you fall asleep facing up the devil will take your soul, and shortly after I once did, when I woke up I couldn't move as described and I freaked out. I was like THE DEVIL HAS MY SOUL AHHHHHHHHH in my head because if you looked at me I looked like I had just woke up and wasn't freaking or anything.

I still won't sleep facing up even if it is comfortable. (I guess its habit from before that and that experience)

Shadow Templar - you are correct. Sleep paralysis is exactly what I was talking about. The brain releases the chemical during REM sleep, which is the stage of sleep where one has dreams.

@ ninerman13 you're explanation sounded correct, but it made me remember Sleep paralysis. Maybe its both, or they are teh same thing. It sounded different from mine, but ti's not like i know all that much. Thats what you get when you have an engineering student talk medical jargon.

    The brain is so complex.......lol

    You speak the truth.

    According to MedTerms.com:

@ Shadow Templar - so yeah, you and I were talking about the same thing, just different aspects.

These stories are interesting, I've heard about it before, but rarely, and I have never had it happen to me. Must have been interesting to be scared but at the same time, not feel too terrified about it.

warrior. You're on a Starcraft2 forum. Nobody here is going to be able to even come close to answering your questions. If you're really concerned, go see a doctor. They're trained professionals, and can at the very least point you in the right direction. We can't even do that.

Do you think it may just have been your imagination that made you feel that you were being attacked?

It could be possible that since your brain really thought you were under attack, ou mind and nervous system could have been tricked into giving you a false sence of pain. But I'm no expert, and for all I know, this idea may not be possible, but does sound likely.
