Today for some odd reason I remembered someone saying I came off as a much nicer person when I had that dancing elmo figure as an avatar many months ago. Which made me consider these questions:
    • How much does one's avatar/signature contribute to how they're treated/imagined to be like?
    • Should it contribute at all or is it inevitable/necessary (because it might reflect personality/taste)?

The image of forumers counts a lot into how their posts are interpreted. But how much do their avatars/signatures influence their image and impression on other members?

    Good thread.
I think it certainly has influence on how people look at your posts. Especially your avatar, since that is, in a way, your face here.

Signatures are different in my opinion. You can use them to place stuff you like in, a quote, some links, or a combination of that, like I did.

On the other hand, you can also use a signature as an extension of your avatar. I am not really a big fan of this, but it is called your signature for a reason. It --should-- reflect you, in theory. I just like using it for things I find funny or usefull.

As for the personality thing: when I post outside the social area, I try to be a serious poster. My avatar reflects that, at least I hope so. Your avatar reflects that you are artistic, or it gives me that impression.

I thought on turning off my sig in non-social boards, but we have to do that manually each time, so I would forget about it all the time. Hmm, this is interesting. I might even post a deep analisys later on.

Our avatars can paint a good picture fr what we expect. I know it was said before but I feel the same so I'm saying it again. Unlike aurora though, I use my avatar to reflect what I'm feeling side. Hint's the weird rabid bunny, I've been feeling more open and unusual lately so I found something that is colorful and weird looking. Has anyone ever thought that their avatar they choose may also reflect how they are feeling.

It tells me that you like starcraft and prefer the protoss it looks like. Also it tells me that, since you picked one that is in an attack movement, that you most likely see yourself as a strong individual willing to stand up for yourself. Meaning not an easy push over.

This is an interesting observation Kuvasz, I wonder what a study on the subject would reveal. The problem with this kind of stereotype though is that they don't cross cultural memes very well and what means one thing to one person could mean something entirely different to another.

    ---

Bradlers I would have to actually know what was in your avatar before I could even make a guess at an interpretation.

I just like to put whatever I feel is most pretty.

The first rule of making first impressions on the internet: remember that the person behind the post might have been jerking off with one hand and typing it with the other :D

    Eww...

I just put a marine because I like the role they play in-game and i like their animation...

As for my sig, A marine again for the same reasons as before. And a maruder just because they look tough! :D

There is no deep psychological reason for it. Just A: i like Terran B: I like the infantry :wubclub:

According to psychology class there is always a hidden meaning. Of course Fraud himself also said that "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." That was said in response when Fraud said men smoke cigars because they miss their mothers teet, so then someone asked him about him smoking cigars so he said that in response.

    What name change?
    (Seriously, what name change?)

    ---

And what do you guys think of my avatar and the sig? Is it important that an avatar and signature match? Not really important from my point of view, but it would be nice to see what others think.

I've noticed it a longer while ago. While in my case it may not be something clear like peson with such avatar has such and such characteristics, it definately does make a difference. Even if I know people for while, avatar like LT's eye for example always makes the user appear more serious, while some silly gif animation works the other way.

Obviously they do reflect taste and such, since I don't think anyone picks an avatar they don't like, but the above is really the only thing that's really noticeable for me.

Sigs don't matter as much for me.

I think it gives a very good picture of the people too, and there's a reason why i picked the DT you know. A thank to kuvasz for my sig and old avater should be said!
LK I always liked your avatar, as it shows you leadertype very nicely. You are the Carrier and we the interceptors :)
