At least it's not as long as the Chinese script. I know only about 12 characters for now, the semester ended so we had to stop.
blagh, hiragana and katakana are still learnable. Not sure when kanji is used and when the ana's are used though
You should look up Heisig's Remembering Kanji books. It helps in remembering some of the characters by helping you see an actual picture for each Kanji meaning.
As I recall, Katakana is used for proper nouns, while Hiragana is used for just about everything else in the sentence. Of course, I am speaking of something I gave up on four years ago.
