So I've been thinking of picking up a martial art lately and I can't decide what. My main things that I'm thinking about are BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu), Muay Thai, Savate, or Greaco Wrestling.

I have less of an inclination to the oriental martial arts because a lot of them seem far too commercialized and I never learned anything from the two I already did.

If anyone has any suggestions for me, or help choosing one of the ones I already listed, please feel free, I'll be happy to get any feedback :)

Did you just watch "Human Weapon" on the History channel? Haha! Kidding, really depends on what you would like to get in to. BJJ focuses around joint locks and can be useful against bigger opponents, I am thinking of taking classes on it but I would like to go with Judo first to get a better grasp on throws and lock ups. Muay Thai and Savate are pretty brutal, straightforward martial arts. If you prefer going in just to wreck someone, I suggest either one.

Where is bizarro_paragon? He would probably give you a good explanation of each one.

Ugh...I DID watch Human Weapon, and the only one I found remotely interesting was the Savate one. I hate those fights in the end cuz you can always tell that the people they fight are really un-conditioned and are not REAL fights.

I want a martial art that I feel competitive in, yet at the same time feel like I'm actually learning something. My inclination is a lot to Savate, but I don't think there are any Savate schools near where I live

i would consider greek wrestling. just get him on the ground and wreck his face to a bloody pulp! >:D >:D >:D . you cant bother with all the karate, that takes massive strengh to carry of effectively. you'll just look like your dancing. greek wrestling is simpler. some blocks and grabs might be useful.

Krav maga. The point is to immobilize the attacker as effectively and economically as possible. It's no sports, the purpose is to kill (well, in the military version).

What I find a problem is that considering where I live, I'd have to end up driving to either Valencia or LA to do certain forms of martial arts like Savate or Krav Maga. Muay Thai is one of those few martial arts that I listed that I wouldn't have to drive a while to get to.

Nice thought though Scarecrow, I hadn't thought of Krav Maga much really. Again, If anyone has any style that you think is good, plz speak up.

capoeira is that martial art that when done, looks like a mix of fighting and dancing. BJJ is a lot of grappling.

Well, Capoiera was originally done by Brazilian slaves, so the way they practiced this without being caught was by making it look like a dance, hence how it looks like a dance nowadays.

If you really want to do something like Savate, I could guarantee you that it will be harder to find, and more expensive at the same time. Compared to the number of the asian martial arts schools out there, a savate school is a hay in a needlestack.

Reminds me when I was still active in Judo. It´s all about throws and holds, in a "real" fight it´s handy to break your opponents arm/leg depending what you use. It´s still more a Sport than actuall combat training though.

Well, like I said, I could find a Savate school, but I'd have to drive a ways to get to it. So far the only asian martial art out there right now that I'm slightly interested in is Muay Thai. However, if any of you guys have ANY form of martial art out there, plz give me a description of it and then maybe I'll even be interested in it

you should check out hapkido. it focuses a lot on joint locks and throws and is a more 'practical' art that you could more easily use to defend yourself in reality.

Yeah, I've done hapkido for a while. It's pretty easy to grasp. You don't need to be strong or anything. All you need to do is twist someone's body part the right way. It doesn't take that much energy for the most part. For example, there's a move where you step in behind someone, grab their hands, pull it down and twist. That's how simple most of them are.

Hmm sounds pretty interesting. The problem I have with most(or at leas the ones I've seen) of the oriental martial arts here is that its all a bunch of showy, complicated crap...but you're not gonna think of using it in a fight. I think that's why I'm more drawn to ones like Muay Thai, Krav Maga, and Savate. Greaco is in that category as well.

I think that the Oriental martial arts takes too much dedication to use it effectively in a real life situation. I mean, you can learn say, Muay Thai, Krav Maga, and Savate in 1 year and you would be a pretty effective fighter. Not the case for most Oriental martial arts because a lot of them takes years and years of training to be real effective. Just take Shaolin Monks for example and you will understand where I am going.

So if you want to learn to become a effective fighter quickly, I suggest not to take the Oriental Martial Arts. But if you want to live and breath and learn all the philosophic things stuffs, Oriental Martial Arts is the way to go.

Of course, that is just my opinion.
