We've all heard the generally accepted idea that women mature faster than men. I don't think this is true however. Nobody matures. The difference, for the most part, is that men retain the enjoyable portions of a childlike nature; while women hold on to the unpleasant traits.

Example: Grown men still play video games. Grown women still throw temper tantrums.

hahaha thats classic, men play video games :p

this reaching maturity business though... its more talking about physical development as far as puberty goes.

    That includes brain development.

So girls reaching maturity faster, just means they hit puberty earlier, and finish earlier too? i forget
Maturity in general though.. i question whether many people at all ever reach 'maturity'.
Firstly the term mature is definable... but in practical terms is largley based on perspectives and values of what you think is or isnt mature.

Secondly, reaching maturity, tends to indirectly refer to reaching a 'peak' of mental/emotional development etc.

The thing is,... you're changing constantly as you get older and this doesnt stop until you die.
You never really reach a 'peak' of maturity as such, you just keep changing.
So taking the word 'maturity' in a different context...

Wine would 'mature'. That just means its developing, for a rather simple defenition, to the point of being ready.
So maturing, really just means growing, changing, untill the point of being ready.

But what's the point of being ready? And what for?

Does being mature mean your ready to begin your life in the real world once leaving school?
Does being mature mean your emotionally and mentally capable of maintaining a balanced life?
Does being mature mean you're ready to die as a happy content person?

Maybe im reading into it too much, but it just seems too broad and open to perspective somehow.

EDIT* that was my take on the concept of maturity.... haha but i think that may have been too much of an 'indirect' reply..

What you said as an example,...

grown men still throw temper tantrums, and hold onto unpleasant traits...
ya know some people might consider that grown men playing computer games is a mature thing to do. Some people consider grown adults, who can still enjoy things like that without feeling embarrassed or whatever, to be mature.

headstock had a good reply, but when I said "mature" in that first post, I meant: "the common perception of maturity per the majority of society"

    that makes sense....

but i dont know what that is...

what is maturity? according to the majority of society?

And again in reply to the first post, i can think of several girls i know, and when i say girl they're in their mid 20s, and they're free as a bird, and i can imagine them retaining a part of their youth with them always

Who has a 401K plan and goes to work at 12 years old? I never got a job until 17, but still no 401K. Maturity is about physical development, not much about behavior. But that does play a part in what society thinks is mature.

    *Waking up* "5 more minutes!!!"

Also, I consistently use the phrase "nuh-uh."

    I think I'm pretty mature.. ;)

I'd always had the impression it was the opposite actually... thought maturity (amongst people) referred to mental development more than physical.

    I still eat Apple Jacks.

I think both are correct, it's just a person's individual opinion on which truly defines maturity. Some people define maturity by physical defelopement. The hormones that cause physical development are directly related to a person's maturity. Most scientist agree with this idea.

Many also define maturity by mental and behavior development, this can also be correct because the hormones that cause physical change also affect a persons behavior patterns. The more a person is mature physically, usually the more they are mature mentally as well.

However, the theories are based on averages. On average, women mature a few years earlier than men do. Most women start to mature at the age of 10-11, whereas males don't usually begin to mature until 12-13 years of age. It's a scientific fact.

Its based on genetics as well. The mind can affect it somewhat, but the body as a internal mechanism that is programed to start at a certain age to begin the maturing process. And for women, that mechanism tends to gobe programed to go off faster than it does in males.

Just like a robot, the human body runs on programs and a control network. All parts of the body work the way they do because they were programed to do it. The body can easily be seen as a robot.

The brain is the motherboard and computer chips.
Immune system is the virus checker and anti-spyware
Nerves are the sensors that detect errors in the network.
Eyes are the vidoe cameras that load and store information to the motherboard and chips

The brain basicly is programing the rest of the body. It programs the heart to pump blood, the lungs to breath, and the digestive system to move food in the right direction.

Are we a machine that obeys everything?
Aren't we suppose to be people?
Think deeply of the real world

I do. But think about how the body works. If the brain doesn't program the body to work the way it's supposed to, what does. It is fact that the brain controls and regulates everything the body does. It's the advancment of our brain that makes us human insted of a robot. Robot chips can only program so much, the brain is much better and can store more information than any computer chip can.

The body obeys exactly what the brain tells it to. The brain says press left ring finger down, it moves down. It tells the body to get up and walk, it does.
