I shall put forth a good example by not quoting unnecessarily and just linking the stuff :p

    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/itn/20080909/twl-physicists-ignore-black-hole-theory-41f21e0.html

In a nutshell, scientists will try to replicate the big bang. Some are very optimistic while others claim the experiment to be highly dangerous due to the possibility of creating black holes and allowing beings from other universes to enter Earth, the latter of which I found very amusing :D

What do you think will happen on Wednesday morning?

I have heard the same thing, i don't think they will succeed..i mean...a black hole is a mad force

My friends and I are having a huge 3v3 today in WC3.

If our team wins I'm dying happy.

I doubt a tiny black hole like they would make could kill us off. IF, and that's a big if, they recreate the big bang and black holes were formed, all the black holes would evaporate in a flash from Hawking radiation. It might suck a few atoms in, but that's the worst it'll do.

    As Hawking said...
So why would creating one under a controlled and monitored environment destroy the universe?

Also, has this already happened or is it 8am US or Swiss/French time? I'm assuming it's gonna be Swiss/French time.

Oh dear, it appears the LHC is going to fire up..... it will be interesting to see the results of the experiments conducted at the facility, and you know what? it appears they also have plans for an even bigger one! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VLHC

For me, it's the fact that it IS controlled. The random ones in the atmosphere are already random. The ones they make in the LHC have a possibility of going OUT of control.

Well I really hope this doesn't end the world. I still really wanna do lots of stuff.

Anyways back to discussion. If its so dangerous why don't some people stop them or prevent it from happening by like stopping the project. Wouldn't it be more wise to create this project on another planet to be safe, or even a space station. It's way better than having the world be destoried.

If this does happen would there be any way to stop it? Or is it a kind of instant kill thing?

I don't really see why everyone seems that worried, the firing tomorrow will be low power, nothing much is suppose to happen, the actual experiments begin in October.

There was a similar accelerator a few years back in the early 2000's called the RHIC (or something....) everyone got worked up about that, all the claims we see for the LHC were present, then they fired that one up and... well... nothing happened, its 8 years later and its running smoothly with no real danger. I believe the LHC scare will pass in a similar fashion. There is very little to be afraid about.

Though.... if the LHC does happen to have an... accident.. it would be nigh impossible to stop, every single doomsday prediction based or centered around the LHC is based on things we can barely understand, example: a black hole forms that doesn't decay under hawkings radiation and managed to consume enough matter to grow to a sufficient mass to uhhhh... consume more matter at an accelerating rate, we can't stop a black hole......

It's not going to end the world. Dozens of experts already ran simulations and made calculations, and the possibility of a black hole consuming the planet is astronomically low. This makes as much sense as the people who worried the world was going to end on June 6, 2006.

But the collisions themselves are no different to the ones going on in the atmosphere as we speak. The only difference is they're able to monitor these ones. Think of it like a lightning bolt starting a bushfire. It happens all the time out in the bush, but obviously it's near impossible to be there when it starts, so they create it under a controlled environment. It's still that same as what's happening out there, but they can study it. They fire the start might have a possibility of going out of control, but so do all the wild bushfires. Now seeing as the collisions in the atmosphere haven't imploded the universe yet, the chance of the same collision that's being studied imploding the universe wouldn't be too likely now, would it?

@ Wlck. What was going to happen on June 6, 2006?

If we stopped cause we were afraid of what might happen, it would prevent gain.

If the Wright brothers stopped doing their experiments, because they were afraid. What would the world be like today?

We can't let fear of the unknown, slow us down. We must push ahead, for a better tomorrow.

There's a huge difference between the potential dangers of this and being afraid. The dangers of what the Wright brothers were doing don't even compare to this. It's just not comparable. What Rex was saying is if this could potentially destroy the Earth or whatever, why is it still going ahead? I'd simply say it's because the chances of something awful happening are insignificantly small. They've obviously done all the calculations and they've obviously monitored the risks involved. Even if there was a one in a thousand chance of something going completely wrong, they wouldn't go ahead with it. What they're doing is going on as we speak. They're just creating one so they can monitor and study it.

I know. I'm more or less joking, I'm a huge proponent of particle colliders. Astrophysics is one of my fave fields tbh, and black holes have always fascinated me.

On this subject, have any of you read the David Brin book 'Earth'? It kinda sorta goes along these lines (Doomsday one anyway)

Some people were worried the Antichrist was going to come to earth and begin the apocalypse. 06/06/06 =P. Some people were actually getting C-sections so they wouldn't be born on that day. Of course Slayer released a new album that day too. :)

Ah yeah, I remember that. Sorry, didn't make the connection. Isn't the world also supposedly going to end sometime in 2012 or something? Something about the Aztecs or Mayans forecasting the apocalypse? In that regard, this thing tomorrow morning can't possibly destroy the universe, otherwise the Mayans'll've been wrong. :p

I was just saying Itza, I know they are far apart. I was just trying to make a point.
