    What's wrong with using proper English these days? Is it such a difficult language to master, or isn't it super hardcore coolz anymore to use normal words when discussing serious stuff?

    It seems that a lot of the newest members only like to speak with very short words and even replacing whole words with just a single character or number. And it's not only at these forums, it's happening everywhere. Is it so hard to type one or two characters extra in a word? It only takes half a second longer and it is way easier to read. Is this because of the always rising use of programs like MSN and online friend networking sites or something? I am not complaining or something, I just don't get it.

    What do you guys think? Is the everyday English slowly disappearing into a mass of abbreviations and street language, or is it just me?

    It's just a matter of taste, really. I don't care about that type of English because the person embarrasses him/herself. I'm annoyed at decent people raping English with their spelling errors, who - in most cases - can spell correctly. Such examples are simple words like seige, neseccary and stuff like that.

    For the past few days I was considering starting a thread to collect errors but I thought people would take it too personal even though the thread would be very beneficial to most of our users.

    I for one would rather know what mistakes I make...

    I would prefer people to type correctly, capitalize their words and follow grammar rules... I can be quite picky with these things as some of you might know :) But 1337-speak and Chat-type talk has become an unchangeable part of our lives. Also, for most people here English is a second language.

    Btw, I would definitely like to know what mistakes I could make especially in sentence construction.

    @kuvasz
    I think that would indeed be kinda insulting, but I bet I would LMAO @ that.

    ^
    Hypocrisy ;)
    I mean, how many people know what all of those things mean? Especially people who don't spend that much time on chatting and things like that. Or people like me, who have English as their second language, who don't ever use these things normally. For example: lol is a regular Dutch word, it pretty much means the same as fun[/in]. I was like: what's the matter with all those people using Dutch words in English. Then I discovered it meant]laughing out loud. I felt like such a fool, but it wasn't really my mistake. The English language is just being raped, although "words"like lol aren't that bad.

    It's not that hard to prevent most of the common spelling mistakes though. Mozilla Firefox users can always use one of the dictionary add-ons. I use the English dictionary, and the only problem I still have is the making of grammar mistakes from time to time. You can't correct that with a dictionary, but I don't really mind these mistakes. But if you can't even spell the most common words, then for God's sake, use a dictionary add-on for your browser.

    @GM_k & Meee
    I have absolutely no idea what I am doing wrong, until I have re-read my post. After doing that I often edit some sentences or words, but it's just unavoidable to do some stuff wrong I think.

    Maybe some people who speak English as their first language have some tips? For example, what's the difference between using then and than? I have always wondered what the difference is... :p

    [edit]
    By the way Meee, you just said "usualy""instead of "usually" in spam land if you would like to know. ;)

    All these -speaks are just popular now, you can't really help that in general. Wether it's a threat to actual language will show in time. Personally I like to use them for fun, but they're way out of place in regular conversation like all the new zerg discussions

    btw. Do you know any add on for Firefox that would let me switch spellcheck language? FF has one built in without them, but mine is in Polish and I use that one too for roleplay posts

    I would like to search for them, but my browser automatically directs me to all of the Dutch pages, even when I change the letters in the url that determine the language. I wanted to post a link to an English dictionary for Firefox earlier, but then I would have to post a Dutch page, which would be a weird thing to do...

    If it automatically redirects you to your language, it should do the same for others too
    well... it should...

    I'm not using any dicitionary plugins and English is my second language. The difference is that I pay attention to my post simply because I don't want to look like a jerk.

    Oh and while at second languages, US residents have some of the worst spelling with English being their mother tongues.

    English is my 3rd language and like Kuvasz i try to make my posts clear and firm, because I do not want to look like a stupid n00b.

    Edit: Look for a hidden joke!

    I wanna correct every post I see that has bad punctuation and capitalization, but that would kinda weird and not too polite, possibly even an abuse of my powers.

    I know the feeling Fenix, factual mistakes things also bug me like saying the wrong char's name when saying something...

    I know that my posts tend to have atleast 1 mistake in them and it really bugs me when I see them, but I hate rereading a post 8 times to try and notice those mistakes.

    Like the fact that 'Factual mistakes things' has no place in the English language and that you forgot a comma after 'me'?

    You should use proper English in every forum and proofread your posts. The only exception to this is space junk where you can spam all you want and use 1337 sp34k all you want.

    Yes, I find it annoying at times also, though I have gotten so used to it I don't notice when people do it unless it's a lot.

    Seems so ;D and char could even mean the Zerg homeworld here so it's even more confusing :p

    As for FTW, IIRC and AFAIK, they're just way too long to type out properly ;D

    Yes it means that. But "correct me if I'm not mistaken" doesn't make any sense ;D

    I love this thread.
