For the first time in human history, man has discovered the first planet to be just like earth! It is named Gliese 581c.

European Astronomers have found a planet outside the solar system but is still quite close (if you consider 20 light years close), and is believed that this certain planet can support life, with double the gravity of earth, and 12,000 miles across, it is larger then Earth but it does have, land, water, and air, which gives it high chances of life!
Since the planet is in the goldilocks zone(a zone where in it is not too hot or cold to support life) the chances are very high. And the thought that we are not alone, may be realized :)

read the articles for more information:

    Enjoy!

Pls. Vote the poll if you think there is life or none on the new planet! :)

    *punches Ace*

It is a distance, namely the area crossed by a light beam in a single year

    2 years old -_-

Could be life i suppose, don't get hopes up about it being intelligent though...

Awesome! Something like Earth had to exist somewhere in space. It was just a matter of time before we found something.

    EDIT
Apparently this is old news o_O. Articles date back to 2007 & 2004
    New to me however.

I already knew about this ages ago.
By the way, radoiwaves move with the speed of light. We have been sending them all over the place for about 50 years now. If there would be intelligent life there, -same level as us- then they could have already responded 10 years ago. I do believe there could be life there, though. Higher gravity just means life will be a bit smaller or something. It has little to do with IF life could work there, only with HOW it will work there.

lol, its a distance, not a date, lol

"A light-year is a unit of distance. It is the distance that light can travel in one year. Light moves at a velocity of about 300,000 kilometers (km) each second. So in one year, it can travel about 10 trillion km. More p recisely, one light-year is equal to 9,500,000,000,000 kilometers."

    0_o?!?!?!?!
LOL i didnt see that, let me see, ...

    Aurora,

However, a theory by some scientists distrupts that fact, the theory states that the radio waves decimate the farther they go, and eventually becoming nothing more then noise, and there is a great chance this is true, since otherwise we would have spotted radio waves from other civilizations ages ago...

    No, we don't.
20 lightyears is equal to 20 years of travelling time for radiowaves. If there are others sending signals this way, then it would take the waves at least 20 years to reach us. -since this planet is the closest- So they might have send messages to earth already, but it could still take decades to reach us. Besides, we have been doing this for just 50 years, which is absolutely meaningless in the big picture. 50 years may be long for us, but there might be creatures out there that live for thousands of years. -some tree spiecies can, so maybe there could be more intelligent creatures with the same body structure-

Also, they might deteriorate over time, but if there is little in the way, then 20 lightyears should be no problem. Scientists have been sending signals way further then that. Why would they even try, if they know it would be impossible for their signal to reach that far? :s

Why does it have to be garbled? Could be perfectly clear and we just cannot understand their language...

Of course there are lifes on other planets, but no intelligence. Else I am sure we have already been annihilated

I would take, erm, --them-- quite some time to reach us when they notice there is life here. We have only been sending signals for a short while, maybe they are travelling to earth as we speak. hehe, lol :p Also:
I think that creatures that are intelligent enough to send a signal, should be smart enough to send an universal message. A repeating code or something. With the intervals in such a way, that it resembles the different numbers of protons in basic elements, or something. Nothing more universal then that.

There must be life in space, but it is not sure that that planet is populated.

Other subject: I think you heard about that on Mars they found ice, and some kind of fossils, that contained the tracks of bacteria. It would have been interesting, if an other lifeform existed on Mars, but something went wrong.

we dont? (i got lost on that part)

its only a new theory, what you said is very possible but their is such a theory...

though i really hate that theory, otherwise this would all be a waste of sending radio waves to space.

also the speed at when they deteriorate can be even faster then the theory says, but i don't know if it is true, lets hope that this theory though is false.

intelligent life? hmmph, like aurora said, they may be on their way here,
we may be luckier then any other life form, since the ABUNdance of planets is sooooo high, the chances are that we are surrounded by other species in the universe, but there are chances, that we were saved from early enslavement if there were intelligent life that enslaves, by the fact of OUR location, we havent discovered any aliens, maybe we are seperated from the rest of the other races, but do NOT forget, that they may not be evil, so they come in peace, hopefully.

Yeah, just knowing we exist doesn't necessarily mean that the first inclination a higher life-form would have would be to destroy us. It wouldn't necessarily be in their interests to do so.

I would guess there is no intelligent life on that planet as well. But, I'm very curious on what the life forms look like on that planet, if any. Apes with scales? Who knows.

the concept of protons, neutrons, electrons, and the atom are human theories, you know.
aliens might have a slightly or greatly different concept about matter.

What do we do? Don't we still send out the one meant to be disclosed with the location of earth and human anatomy?
