In regards to the SCII beta, is there any any evidence or indication that there will be a new race that will appear in the full game? Maybe some of you have seen some unit entries in the galaxy editor which may hint at something? I was hoping that the Samoengy would be making an appearance.
Blizzard announced that there would be no new "playable" race in the game other than Terran, Protoss, and Zerg. But I can imagine that in the map editor, a custom game could make a custom race.
Warcraft III allowed "NPC races" (such as the naga and draenei), "partial races" like the Burning Legion and "subraces" like blood elves (which shared some units/stuff with the playable races). There's no doubt StarCraft II will have stuff like that. In fact, in Q&A Batch 13, Karune said there would be xel'naga and/or hybrid units. (This was before Twilight was published; now it looks like the two might be the same.) On top of that, Raynor's Raiders will be similar to the blood elves; it will share at least some units with the basic terran race, but will also have some old units (eg goliaths, medics) and some new NPC units as well (eg spectres), and even mercenaries, including the United Earth Directorate-based Spartan Goliaths. And some units (eg the hellion) will have campaign-specific upgrades that are too powerful to allow in the multiplayer game. And their opponents will often have special old or new units as well. For instance, the Tal'darim (a protoss faction) have old tech like Scouts, while the zerg sometimes have new units, like brutalisks and centaurs. Even the tauren marine appears in an Easter egg (although apparently it doesn't attack anything). The end result is a Raynor's Raiders army will probably only bear a passing resemblance to a Terran Dominion army, which might appear quite different from Moebius Forces, which might be quite different from ... whatever terran factions there are. The protoss factions will also be different. In Legacy of the Void, you will use diplomacy to assemble factions, and most likely there'll be an Aiur "purist" faction and a Dark Templar-only faction. But for multiplayer, there will only be three races. And for the samoengy, that's not a StarCraft race. There was some confusion about them earlier, though.
Samoengy was just a fun thing Samwise made up on his personal art site. Or so the story goes. Maybe we'll see them in a new Blizz IP someday, but deff not SC2. Well, maybe in the fully released editor you'll get lucky and see a few. War3's editor had rines, hyrdas, and lings in it for fun. Even then, most models were locked out of the beta editor to prevent spoilers. (BTW, thanks a whole ****ing lot for ignoring the use of spoiler tags, Kimera) I agree with Svenja, 3 is enough. Blizz agrees too, that's why they scrapped the idea of a fourth playable race before even announcing the game. It's about balance and keeping the races distinct.
weren't the samoengy also in a novel as well? granted, i haven't read any starcraft books, and i don't consider any of them canon (even if they're endorsed by blizzard)... if it's not in the game or straight from the horse's mouth, i'm inclined to ignore it.
Wow I've never heard of this samoengy stuff, the art looks pretty amazing! Who knows this might indeed be concept art for their new IP.
The Xel Naga will probably make an appearance with some sort of unique unit or partial race like Kimara said.
