That's almost six month old and never going to happen. Further, it's not even possible. You can only shut it down by physically pulling the plug out of every server in the world. Even if he could do it in America, then Americans could still go online by using sattelites owned by other countries.

Lol, it's harder then getting John Connor to shut down SkyWeb. :p

There is no button that disables internet. Sure its possible to make it very uncomfortable for the (US) internet users but you cannot 'turn it off'.

If all the ISPs are forced offline, then what internet do you have? You can't connect through the satellites without them. Direct dial-up to private servers? Could those data signals not be blocked also if the telecom services were obliged to comply?

The network is only as strong as its weakest link. That being the reliance on public networks which are under government control.

Hey if China can block websites with certain themes then I don't think it's far fetched to think that the American government can try to control the internet in the States. Heck the already had tricked millions into allowing them full access into their files on their computers.

ofcourse the president of US can (not shut down the interwebs but he can) disable the interwebs in his own country. And since most of the content of the interwebs are from USA it will result in terrible terrible damage.

Furthermore, the demand for the interweb is so high that people will invent their own local Gorilla-interweb if the original interweb should be shut down.

Does that mean we get bananas instead of cookies? :D

But seriously, the problem is how would gorilla-net be coordinated if there is no internet already in place. If suddenly things did get shut down one day, then what is your contingency? You have no dsl or cable. satellite doesn't connect you. You have no ISP's. You cannot use the telephone exchange for dial-up because data detected on those lines would probably be blocked. So what would be your network?

The only things you have really is your lan and your wifi.

If it did happen, it would probably the final straw which would start the second American revolution.

no way this should even have a chance of working, too many companies and people rely on it for daily use.

    -electronicly paying bills

    -entertainment

    -email, resulting in loss of
    *staying in contact with people
    *comunications between employees and employers
*communications between military opperations and bases at home

    -research for papers/reports

    -advertising

    -making income

-various other activites i cant think of or cant post

Besides, cutting internet would cause a loss of faith in government for the American people, resulting in riots and possible overthrow of the government body, and no sane politician wants that.

EDIT: why does P.A.S.S.I.N.G turn into: passing when posted?

Yeah.... I wouldn't be surprised if the US government had some sort of program capable of shutting down the internet globally. I mean there is really no telling what kind of programs and capabilities they have in the area of cyber warfare.

don't worry, more PATRIOTism will save the day!

in any case, corporations are already doing this. they slow down service for people who actually use their services as advertised (we give you 100GB of bandwidth, and you're using 100? zomg, no more internets for you!)

You guys let something like the patriot act pass into their constitution. What the **** do you expect?! You should have 'rebelled' a long time ago if you actually cared about anything other than your daily income of porn.

I've seen rebellion as an impossibility at this point. Such a rebellion could last for years and would shatter the economy, not to mention would permanently divide the country as waring rebellions would be seeking to take over thier own sections of the country for them to control.

Besides, I've got nothing to hide from the gov't, so if I found my phone was wiretapped and my medical records shown, it would cause me to lose face, but wouldn't cause me to start a rebellion.
