I've been looking at the way people are ranked on ladders and I'm starting to see too much World of Warcraft influence from my perspective. Since you get more points for wins than losses, and have a bonus pool to boot... it seems like its a situation where if you play more then you just automatically get more points. In my own ladder I have people in front of me that are in 4th place with a record of 65-60 while the guy behind them is 35-23. The guy in 4th basically has a win % of 50%. the guy in 5th is at about 60% but considered a "worse" player. I think after a certain point win % is a much better stat to look at than their point system What do you guys think about how people are ranked in the ladders, fair? Unfair? Going to change/stay this way?
The value of win% depends a lot on how battlenet is pairing people up. It is a biased selection because it tries to pair people of similar skill, so 50% wins is where the matchmaking system is working. 60% wins is where that matchmaking system is not working. Points should take player skills into account, by rewarding you higher if your opponents were stronger players, and vice versa. Points should be a better indicator of skill than %. However, there has to be a ladder to climb, and points are trying to serve that role as well. More wins = more points = higher up the ladder. Eventually, when all players find their natural place in the ladder (the ladder becomes stable), then points will reflect true player skill. Until that time, they are a confused blend various quantities and should not be taken too literally.
I dont like how its ranked. Bonus pool has way too much of a impact, unsure what they can do, hopefully they add copper league again, bronze has some nice players.
