I've recently turned 18, still in high school and living with me parents. And no I don't pay any rent to them.

There's this discussion going on right now amongst my year at school. A small amount of students that turned 18 were charged rent by their parents. Although most that are 18 did not get charged for living in their house.

So I would like to hear some opinion from you guys, is it a right thing to do that parents charge their child rent for living with them after the child turned 18?

Recently in Sydney, Australia there is a HUGE shortage of rental property, and housing prices are up through the roof, with ever increasing interest rates that is placing a huge burden on young home leavers. So I think that parents should allow their kids to live with them without paying as long as they are still going through education and are helping around the house.

My parents and I don't really have a system as to who pays what. Usually if I was the 1st to open a bill then I would pay it using my own earnings. Same with groceries and petrol, etc, etc.

It really depends on the family situation, if you already have a job and have finished school than its alot easier for parents to force you to lol. I'l be in uni next year and I've already been confronted with this situation, my parents feel that as long as I keep up with housework and stuff than I won't have to pay rent until I finish uni.
I think that as long as your still in high school you shouldn't have to pay any rent.

It really depends on your custom and culture. Individualistic societies such as those of the United States and other countries places emphasis on the individual, where as those of Group ideals place a heavy emphasis on the family.

Living in an individualistic culture with a parent from a collectivistic culture, I live with the parent, while receiving threats to be kicked out because I didn't unload the dishwasher fast enough. Well, I don't get them anymore, because I am moving out in a month and a half, where I will begin paying rent for a dorm.

My sister gets it a lot worse, because she has the unfortunate affliction of having to prove to my mom how independent she is. While she doesn't have to pay for rent, she does have to pay for a lot of other things I quietly get for free. I see no point in rubbing my mom the wrong way, to the point that she starts retaliating, just so I can...?

That's harsh, threats for unloading the dishwasher too slow. I think parents need to realise that it's not all that easy nowdays for their childern to move out. It might be easier for them when renting prices are a lot cheaper, and where employers turn away immediately because you have no experience in that particular field.

Anyway, unless I move to uni campus next year, I don't think I can go anywhere. I might just keep "leeching off" my parents as some of my classmates were saying. Until I finish uni and get enters full time employment.

im kind of "renting" under one of my parent's apartments. but not paying until i start earning bigtime.
must suck to live in a country with costly renting. my city is pretty expensive to rent but nearly all students are qualified for student allowances so + job = all good ^.^ too bad im not qualified because of my parents so in a way they owe me money o_O

    omg.....no comment....
