There's usually a rather huge gap between theory and prototyping, and actually using it in the practical sense. One example is the idea of having nuclear powered cars (which will probably never happen, because hydrogen-cells are so incredibly effective - and even today we got electric cars coming up that uses the same cells as laptops, which makes them insanely more fuel-efficient).

But I definitely appreciate the tech. We're continuously pushing the limits of what can be done, and I find it very interesting.

Now that the White House isn't occupied by pro-dark age ignorance-glorificating asshat I can actually believe that this technology can make it all the way to real space applications within the firs thalf of this decade.
Mars in 2-3 weeks? Time to buy some land over there as long as it's cheap.

@Kinkseraph: The whole point is that they already do have a protoype. It is not just something scribbled onto a paper.

Yeah but there's a difference between having a prototype and actually seeing it be applied in the industry. But I agree that I wrote it badly. I should've written "theory/prototyping" and not the other.

If the information in the video is accurate (which I did not check) the first real space application should come in 2013 which seems reasonable (although I wouldn't be shocked if it got delayed by one or two years). Not that big of a gap.
You might be confusing commercial applications with applications for projects such as those run by NASA. That's where the gap is.

You do realize that USA has just exceeded a 12 trillion dollar deficit, right?

You're kidding right? When has lack of money ever stopped an American?

Well you got a point there :D
Anyways, I hope they'll do it soon. And if they're successful with the moon base and even finding water on the moon, we might even see a faster development. It'll be interesting to see how Obama cooks things up and stuff.

One thing im looking forward to from this tech, star destroyers or Emperor class battleships. Im going to need a lot of money for either though, but it will be so worth it in the end.

Oh my god, that is amazing, thanks for posting! I am glad to see that were seeing these leaps in technology, I felt like were still using the same layout for space travel that we were using back in the '60s.

Just what we need, more war. .. Wait. That wasn't right. Ah, didn't notice my sarcasm there.

    I'm so subtle. ;p

First space war, they better have that on pay per view. They'll get enought money to pay the US dept.

Agreed, maybe after these plasma engines we'll be seeing anti-matter thrusters. I read a science article discussing the possibility of such technology in the future, one idea is that it could refuel itself by collecting anti-matter at places we know they appear such as the earth's atmosphere. Wicked stuff!

I really hope by then both war and money are extinct, and humanity as a whole is more united ... but that's a whole nother topic of discussion.

I dont want a star trek like universe, it would be quite boring. No, give me star wars, Warhammer 40k, Mass effect, Sins of a solar empire, and whatever else i can think. Besides, humanity will never fully unite unless something is going to wipe us off the map.

I would have to disagree, the exploration of space and pursuit of higher knowledge in a time of universal peace of the human species is a very exciting concept, at least to me. In video games, war seems exciting, but in reality it is hell!
