    True story.

My friends sister was arrested for buying a muffin and throwing it away. Why? because she realized she didn't want a muffin and had no idea why she bought it. This was on my university campus and no friends were nearby or open at the moment to give the muffin to. After being arrested, she was released under academic probation (on the verge of being kicked out of college). I don't think she's had any other problems with the law on campus on her previous records.

Now Relatively, it is wrong to throw away uneaten food anyway. But did the punishment fit the crime?

PS. This police station is somewhat looked down upon by students.
    1) They have tazered students for skating and biking on a large campus, where walking to class would sometimes take 15-20 min. Either that or given a fine without warning.
    2) A murder happened outside of the police station and the man was never caught.
    3) Crime rates on my campus are the highest recently in the past 20 years.
(crimes as in assaults, theft, and attempts at rape)

I believe a punishment is deserved, but not of this magnitude. I would of expected something a LOT less severe.
Even so, I still find it strange since the market throws away uneaten food anyway when closing time approaches.

Maybe they suck at arresting real crime, they're trying to up their self-esteem by arresting students.

Your campus cops are those kind of people who couldn't make as a real cop so they became a college campus cop and since they can only carry out justice to a certain extent...then when they do get to punish people for crimes they like to over do it....

Okay I'm really confused how you can get arrested for throwing something away. Yeah really confused right now.

Are you serious? Arrested for buying a muffin and then doing what she wished under the premise that the muffin was now hers? I'm sorry, but that is stupid. Really, stupid. I can understand if she swiped it thus committing an actual crime but this is ridiculous.

Yeah I know right? I thought the cop would at least give her a warning, or perhaps a scolding of some sort. Not something that would affect her record...

I can't switch campus's since my university has a strong psychology program (my major). Even so, I wouldn't spend my money for that. I don't think something like would happen to me since I pack my own lunch.

With that kind of fools on a campus, I wouldn't even mind if they would throw me out. Nothing more to say, this is just wrong. :/

"Here America, have a slap for lying to us!"

    "Yeah! I am going slaphappy!"

    --------------

Forgive me for the South Park reference, it seemed to fit. :p Anyway, the whole country might always focus on justice and stuff, but they just do not seem to care. Every time they go to some country and help -puke- them, they just turn into a bunch of slackers when the media attention fades away. Absolutely no offense to the soldiers here. Nothing but respect to them. I am talking about the big guys here. What real plans do they have for Iraq now? Retreat? Should have done that years ago. Now they are messing with those Gaza people again, and Afganistan attention fades away....

Arrested for throwing out food? I fail to see why throwing away food ,that decomposes, is a crime. I could see maybe a warning for tossing away a pile of new plastic bags, but throwing away food does no damage to the environment. I sometimes toss leftover pieces of bread from sandwiches into the campus yards for birds etc. to eat. And, as you said, she bought it, and thus has the right to do what she wants with it.

Also, what kind of cops go around watching people throw stuff away?

So, there should have been NO punishment because there was NO criminal offense. It's not illegal to throw away food.

If anyone should get any kind of warning, it should be those who toss away plastics and glass, as those are what cause the problems in landfills.

And time to hire some better cops.

Pretty undeserving of an arrest. They overreacted. I mean... she was arrested for throwing away a muffin.

Umm no. Is this for real?

The only way I could see a punishment being issued was if she stole the muffin. But since bought it and threw it away, it was only her loss.
