So I had probably the most disturbing conversation on Omegle.com just a little while ago. It sort of looked like a copy paste from the movie Jesus Camp. I was talking to someone who started going on with the 'Obama is an evil communist' type of thing prasing Palin and this sort of ultra-right wing propaganda. I then found out that it was 14 year old girl from Florida. I found out that she is catholic and goes to catholic private school. Trying to stay away from politics I started talking about school and we ended up hitting on evolution. Of course she said she does not believe in it. However what got me even more was the fact that she said she does not believe in it; I quote:
Ok that sort of pissed me off. I just could not take this willful ignorance any longer and I objected that she should utilize her critical thinking and not just letting herself to be spoon fed any balony the catholic school wants to. All her responses were in a form of 'You are just trying to be smartass' which is to be expected from a 14 year old or 'Well that is my religion. It's just true for me.' to which I tried to use an analogy what if someones religion was to kill a small child once a month would she be okay with that? She said yes.
I tried to give her chance to re-think her answer couple of times and she conceded that 'If it's my friends or something I would of course stop him but if it's part of his religion there is nothing you can do really. I just have different believes than him!'
Shortly after this the conversation ended hopefuly in relatively good spirit although I did ask her to try and give critical thinking a shot.

Now. What the ****? Am I the only one who thinks kids need some reality check? I mean she is still only 14 but since she is surrounded by only other catholics and christians going into the came catholic schools which brainwashes all students with same kind of crap she might never give up on her willful ignorance. What's worse whenever I disagreed with her she got visibly offended. No wonder that over fifty percent of Americans do not accept evolution if **** like this is acceptable.
Am I being too pushy to think that there is some line which people should not be able to cross? Perhaps a quick interview when someone reaches the age of 18 to make sure that the person know the earth is not flat?

This is absolutely ridicilous. Willful ignorance is probably the only thing in the world that outright offends me.

That might be plausible but that conversation lasted 4 hours and by the end of the conversation I was pretty sure this is not a troll.

Well then what did you expect?
    Omegle connects the WHOLE world.
That means EVERY religion. Almost EVERY nation.
Think of all the people living in a country with dictatorship and communism and people from places such as Saudi Arabia (a women's right, law = religion) ... they will all tell different stories. Even crazy ones.

If you think you're dealing with ignorance, try talking to the dudette that told me that ******* off is wrong and that it's actually MURDERER (killing unborn babies and **** like that).

I hate it when people do that. Teenagers can be critical thinkers as well, and it doesn't often happen that a teenager that just accepts everything society tells her becomes a critical thinker when she is grown up. It isn't the children, it's a part of society, and it makes me sad that you think that they are the main problem.

I wrote that only to shut anyone who would want to come out with the argument 'But she is only 14 so who cares.' otherwise I agree with you completely. But she did not help to get rid of that stereotype that's for sure.

I don't believe it to be stereotypical of christians. I myself am a christian, and most other christians I have interacted with are very kind hearted, and tolerant of things they do not believe in. I myself am very against some of the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, like the pope and priests being the intermedian between people and God. People go to confession stands to confess to priests rather then to confess to God. We true christians believe in the golden rule, and faith and spiritual well being by grace, not by church.

Well it's all history. Religion over the ages has had a habit of only wanting their flock to know what the religion wanted them to know. Teh creationism vs darwinism debate is the best example. We all know evolution exists. It is science, it was proven to be true and still many religious fenatics still refuse their flock to accept this truth. I think the uppers in each religion are scared if their flock knows the truth, then the flock might stray away from the religion.

But the funny thing is for 95% of things they don't want their flock to know - even if the flock did know, they would not leave.

And to Rebel Head. I agree with what you said. In the Bible as we all know Jesus same to Earth and died on the cross and that whole story to remove the worlds sins yes. But also so people did not have to go therough a priest to God. After Jesus death and ressurection people could directly communicate with God.

But the Catholics don't study the Bible. They study the Catechism. Well I think that's what it's called. And from what I know. I'm not a Catholic but some of my family are. I'm a Baptist. But from what I know the Catechism is part Bible and part Catholic doctrine. I don't know why they do not study the whole Bible. Maybe they do not want to refer to the part about Jesus and the cross and now we can communicate directly to God. Cause if they accepted that, then Catholic cofessionals and a lot of their priestly work would be come obselete.

And to reply again to the original post. What she said makes total sence. If all know nothing about a subject. And the first time you hear about it is in the frame of mind of - "this is bad, and there is no need to learn anything about it". You'll tend to believe it. because no one else told you any better. And at 14 she has not had enough worldy experience to know that you never take anything at face value and always look for proof before you accept everything. So she as all people do at that age, blindly accept what they say without questioning it. Sure she is displaying a typical sterotype. But it is one her church created and not her.

I guess the people that lived hundred of thousands of years before judaism and christianity came to be were in a tough luck.

Well that depends on what you believe happened years before Christ, doesn't it?

now here's the kicker: can religion be considered child abuse?

there are religions, or religious sects out there that are just plain bad. if you raised your kid in the KKK, or some bible-thumping racist camp, that kid is going to grow up completely maladjusted and undoubtedly believing that they are "doing the right thing" by breaking tons of laws. chances of getting post-secondary education is practically nil. there was a case not too long ago in my area about neo-nazi parents teaching their kids about white supremacy and denying the holocaust. big legal argument with child services, who believe it constituted abuse.

lots of these kids are being taught that questioning and criticism is a BAD thing and they should never do it. even non-extremist parents naturally do it, they just want their kids to obey them. heck, most universities have a critical thinking and analysis course for all their students in first year because people don't get enough practice doing it properly in school.

Jesus taught to people to live with a sense of honor, justice, and good nature, not by law or code of ethics that you force yourself to do so, but by grace, meaning you are this way naturally. A lot of the priests didn't like what he taught, because it went against them, and because of his fame they wanted him dead. They threatened to kill him if he would not confess that everything he has taught and said to the people is a lie, but he refused by saying what he said is truth. Nobody would die for something they knew was a lie, or weren't too sure of, but Jesus stuck it out to the end, and made the ultimate sacrifice to profess what he says is absolute truth. That's what it means when they say he died for our sins.

Humans can be naturally sinful... you give one man enough power, and he'll become corrupt. Even the supposed holiest of men, the priests and preachers who controlled education among other things during the dark ages and most of the middle ages became very corrupt, which lead to so many divisions in the christian faith. I am not religious, I don't believe in religion. Religion is the institution of faith governed by man, and it can lead to a lot of brainwashing thats not very godly.

Hey, I'm 14, I'm not an idiot. I have an open mind, though I'm not religious to begin with.

I just think that adults are just tyrannical rulers of their children. Our parents don't feed you what you want, they feed you what they want. And when you criticize them or object to their ways, they yell at you and beat you until you submit. They force you to take in their experiences whether or not they were right or wrong. Maybe I'm just drawing on my own experiences where my dad always yells at me when I oppose him even though he's clearly wrong or lacking common sense.

Anyways, Higgs, there's always ignorant people in the world. You can only hope they fall into a pit of fire.

very true. giving a political example here: communism. westerners hate communism because they're facist pricks. nobody really cares that there aren't really any true communist countries. the steps for a communist revolution, are, essentially:
    1. remove power from the current ruling parties.
    2. centralize the power temporarily, to make sure labour and resources are equally distributed among the citizens.
    3. relinquish power to the citizens, so that everyone has equal shares in labour and reward.

nobody ever gets to step 3. step 2 is never temporary. i wonder why.

Communism is not much different than fascism, infact they are almost identical in that they both are systems where the state, usually under the control of a single political organization, or faction recognizes no limits to its authority and strives to regulate every aspect of public and private life wherever feasible. I believe you're thinking too much into the false left-right political paradigm, where you have communism all the way to the left, and fascism all the way in the right. Actually, the correct way to see things is you have total government all the way on the left, no government all the way to the right, and than somewhere in the middle you have the constitutional monarchs who protect from the adversity of either total government or no government.

Communism is never meant to reach the step 3 you are mentioning, it is just another form of totalitarianism, like fascism. In Communism, the state controls, manages, and distributes all resources held by a nation. The people have no hand in the management of labor and resources, only the state does. It is one of the most tyrannical governing systems out there. I like the idea of equality, what I support is the equal distribution of the best and most up-to-date technology, education, and goods... but you won't find that with communism, just the illusion of it.

Dark Templar, I know how you feel man, I went through that same crap with my dad. Lucky for me, I found God to learn from, and guide me to a better path.

Communism isn't a problem philosophy really. It gets a lot of bad press in the Western world because of the 20th century conflicts. It is an ideal, and a reachable one at that, but it is fragile without regulation. Western conflicts weren't against communism explicitly, but in response to the hardship suffered by persons in those soviet lands, and against the leaders who were pretty antisocial. The reason why that hardship existed was because the leaders had their own crazy agendas, which went against the spirit of enriching the lives of the people. That's a problem with the leaders, not with the philosophy.

On another layer, communism does seek to debauch the currency of foreign nations, which is perhaps worrying to a country built on capitalism, that the communist country can't be financially exploited, because the dollar has no perceived value there. So soviet hate is partially a fear of a growing foreign economy that cannot easily be exploited.
