I've been playing Starcraft for a while and I have noticed that when the battle drags on too long and it just so happens you and your enemies were running out of minerals while your vespene gas reserves will just deplete and will still be gather-able but at a lower rate. You also thought there might be a hope to win but, you only needed a least a bit more minerals to help you even the odds but, you can't. Basically, you'd be stuck with low minerals and think you could come back strong, so heres my idea for the Starcraft 2 is when the mineral mines deplete, it will show some depleted mines of where the minerals were and you could build a building that could mine for minerals that are depleted and have minerals underground.

I thought of this idea because I remembered that when people ran out of resources (example: gold, silver, etc...), they start building underground mines to find more gold. So why not apply that same principle into starcraft where when your minerals are depleted but, you can build a structure that helps mine and have workers go into the building to bring out minerals(most likely a rates of depleted vespene gas mines or a bit higher, but still help to contribute)

*My ideas were all scattered but, please tell me what you think of my idea

That's actually a great idea! I like it. I hate it when I run out of minerals. :good:

But it completely defeats the concept of limited resources. Maybe there could be a trading station neutral building that lets you trade sheep for bricks, exscuse me, vespene for minerals. Or you could sell units there. Terrans can already salvage their buildings.

    Selling units is weird.

I kind of like the idea of unlimited minerals and having to build a separate building for it. That way no game could become a stalemate, which would prevent players from turtling behind their defenses when short on resources.

I came up with this a while ago but I didn't make a proper topic on it. Nice idea.

I always build up to higher tier and build strong defenses and I run out of minerals. :(

All I have to say on that statement is that someone has played Settlers of Catan WAY too much :p

I really like the idea of building the mine. You should only be able to make one though because otherwise people would use it as an alternative to building another base and expanding...

What about depleted minerals, where the workers gather 1 instead of 8 like the gas?

I had no idea that someone else had a some threads like this but, like the mineral farming idea, this one is mining; in a sense underground. I just wanted to share my thoughts and I wasn't sure if anyone else thought of it also. As for yellow minerals, it also will eventually run out so it would still end in that same situation as depleted with nothing left but, will only delay the unavoidable.

For farming minerals, I kinda think that its not a bad idea but, the whole concept of growing minerals... is weird. But it was actually an interesting idea.

    Sorry, I only have ore.

Overall, I like the idea. One of the worst points you can be at in a SC game is having no resources and no real way of getting anymore. You just wait for the other player to finish you off. This way you can at least have some way of building back up your forces, if only to launch a final assault, or to get into a position where you can take back/ take over a resource patch. Still because it is depleted, it won't have an enormous effect on the gameplay. The player with the non-depleted resources has a clear advantage and will be able to overcome any turtling that could occur by sending more troops to whittle down the defenses.

I must say, im against all those things....
If it´s a slatemate it´s your own fault...
Anyone remember the Savior match vs a Terran player (FBH?), where it looked like a slatemate, but FBH(or who it was), just had 3000 minerals left and used them right. That won the match for him,

well, let me put it this way or overstretch it so that it may actually seem like a good idea when you really need it. You make a bet with your friend, say $50 that you were going to win. Both of you lasted for a long time into the game and are about to be depleted in resources, you and him go all out with one stand off and you seem to just couldn't build that last unit, say you had like 5 minerals more needed and then you both fought and he ends up winning with a badly damaged unit. Don't you wish that measly 5 minerals was somehow added into your reserves so you could have built that unit?

Hey! You can never play too much Settlers of Catan. I'm good at it and I have even won a few local tournaments. I have even made my own versions with new rules, but no StarCraft version yet...

I really like this idea. A limit on the number of mines you can build might be the best way to balance it, somewhere around 3 per player. Also they should give only the same amount of resources as a depleted geyser to discourage turtling in the early game and require the entire mineral patch be mined away.

This could be a bad idea though. In SC1 the player had to rely on proper micro and resource management to win during a stalemate. This could end the emphasis on micro and resource management the game had when there were no resources left. If it doesn't make it in the game, there's always the map editor anyways. :p

I actually like this general idea. My suggestion would be that when minerals "collapse" they turn into a kind of mindshaft opening and instead of providing 8 minerals per return they provide 1 mineral per return.

This would no more encourage turtiling than what we had before because it still favors the person with the larger number of mineral patches, the same is also true for stalmate games this gives the advantage to the person who already had it (in terms of territory).

Well, actually, its not really the end, you could look at it as if there were more room for error but still needs a lot of micro and resource managements, the mining would boast your chances and might even make you think you have the most minerals in the world after like 20 minutes but, it still would take longer and time is a factor in the game. Like who can build the largest army first or get to their goal first to win.

    @ LordKerwyn,

Agreed, especially the part about the mineshaft opening part, that was what I was thinking but, it may have been how I said it that others might have thought of something else.

Might I also add that, (I don't know if they have this or not in SC2) you can't really "sell" or "trade in" a unit back for resources and on top of that, once you've created the unit that you might not need later on, you can kill it (too bad the delete button function doesn't work here like in Age of Empires 2) but you really won't get any benefit out of that anyway. Say you invested in a hell lot of minerals for drones/scvs/probes to harvest minerals but, you're all depleted out and now you're left with a hell lot of drones/scvs/probes and its just a waste of space and you already have a lot of them filling the vespene extractor/refinery/assimlator. What do you do after that, destroy your gathering unit to make room for your other units (your mineral count is still limited but situated to be part of your strategy assumingly)? This would at least fill up some gap there.
