    Linky

tl;dr version: A variant of the Ebola virus (basically the most terrifying, **** your pants sickness out there) has been found in pigs in the Philippines.

And it transfers between swine and humans. Effortlessly.

The farm workers who tend to the pigs are infected, but so far they show no ill effects.

    But seriously. It's freakin Ebola.

I've never been a fan of pork in general. There's just something about that just seems filthy to me.

    Vincent:Want some bacon? Jules

Jules: No man, I don't eat pork.

    Vincent: Are you Jewish?

Jules: Nah, I ain't Jewish, I just don't dig on swine, that's all.

    Vincent: Why not?

Jules: Pigs are filthy animals. I don't eat filthy animals.

Vincent: Bacon tastes gooood. Pork chops taste gooood.

Jules: Hey, sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie, but I'd never know 'cause I wouldn't eat the filthy mother****er. Pigs sleep and root in ****. That's a filthy animal. I ain't eat nothin' that ain't got sense enough to disregard its own feces.

Vincent: How about a dog? Dogs eats its own feces.

Jules: I don't eat dog either.

Vincent: Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal?

Jules: I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Vincent: Ah, so by that rationale, if a pig had a better personality, he would cease to be a filthy animal. Is that true?

Jules: Well we'd have to be talkin' about one charming mother****in' pig. I mean he'd have to be ten times more charmin' than that Arnold on Green Acres, you know what I'm sayin'?

It's a medical certainty, due to the unstable nature of virii, that eventually something uncurable will mutate into existence. After that, it's purely a matter of infectivity.

Quit fear mongering. Seriously. I can't tell you how much this reminds me of Today Tonight.

    A few key notes:
    And...

The very fact that humans are showing no signs or symptoms from being infected with a strain of the freaking Ebola virus is most likely, for them, a good thing, and by good thing, I mean a very, very good thing. Immunisations and anti-virals are most commonly found from these weaker strains, which can be either the infected host's immune response or simply just the weaker strain itself. Remember small pox from all those junior Science videos? Cow pox provided a means of immunisation. Remember swine flu from last weak? It mutated into a weaker, but more contagious, strain which provided us with a vaccine.

So, Ebola virus with no symptoms? That's awesome. Not only am I going to eat more pork to increase the risk of eating an undercooked and infected rib, but I'm flying out to the Philippines to lick those pigs right now!

I believe I mentioned in my very first post that the farmers are showing no ill effects.

But, due to a virus' unique makeup, they mutate on the drop of a pin. Yes, it's not dangerous to humans, but it's still deadly to most monkeys. It's literally only a few proteins away from being deadly to humans. And you can't get it from ingestion due to the fact that you (hopefully) cook it. However, undercooked pork would still, I imagine, pose a threat.

I remember Ebola infected monkeys making their way into the US and the government took care of it before there was a major infection. I doubt this will be a problem.

Yeah, I know. I was just hamming it up.

You've got to remember, though, that if the virus does mutate, it'll be one single virus, which will then go on to multiply. It's not as though everyone with the pig-Ebola virus will all simultaneously and spontaneously become infected with full blown Ebola when it mutates, and in that regard, the virus' deadliness can also become its weakness. Although Ebola can last a while, not only has it got the potential to kill its host before it can spread to another, but also with the immediate isolation and quarantine of any infected people, it's not given much of a chance to spread.

As for eating undercooked meat, that's problematic enough. Just make sure it's cooked through, just like any meat. Except beef stake of course, which has to be medium rare, regardless of any breakout of worms, Mad Cow or the cow Ebola.

Eewww.... cooking a steak above medium rare is a sacrilege. Seriously though you shouldn't worry about these kinds of things. The government is usually getting this information way before the media does, and it has several things in place to deal with an outbreak if there ever is one. However, I doubt as I said there will be anything serious hitting our nations food supply. Also, this is another good reason to buy food grown in the US and not in foreign countries. It's just safer.

Ouch. There is a special circle of hell reserved just for you, Kaaraa.

Though in retrospect, I'd be pleased to say that that turned out to be one epic pun.
