So I don't know if you guys have already heard about this but I just found out about this. While researching how protoss shields could work I stumbled across an article form 2007 talking about how the US army is experimenting with hot plasma shields. From what I found it's branching two ways. The one that is mostly getting researched into is a bubble of plasma that will appear around an object and a laser will be shot int it causing it to react and produce shock waves. This method will give the object semi-protection while also hitting the attackers with shock waves to give them time to strike the attacker. This method apparently is going prototype this year, the only problems they have right now is that it takes up to much power to do this so the military is waiting for it to use less power. The second method that I discovered is to generate a bubble of hot plasma around an object. Hot plasma is so hot that nothing can get through it, as it disentagrates anything that touches it. The problem right now with that method is that the object inside will melt from the inside temperature. So scientists are experimenting with covering the object in a layer of cold plasma which will keep it from melting. Just thought you'd guys like to know that we are coming close to the age of force fields
Link or it didn't happen. Sorry. And most sci-fi force fields work with some sort of magnetism, not with plasma. Plasma is opaque, so pretty useless on any vehicle.
I had three sources and one of them was a piece of paper at a college. Here are two of them: http://blog.wired.com/defense/2007/05/plasma_shield_m.html http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/technology/cold_plasma_000724.html
Ooooo, I just took a look at the pictures and a few sentences, crazy stuff! However, I'll have to read it later as well. I have an exam tomorrow
Interestingly, Frank Herbert came up with this ages ago, albiet in a different form. In his writing, he had personal shields. If they were shot with a lasgun (His version of lasers), they'd produce an insanely huge explosion.
That's the idea behind the first source form wired.com To use the shield as a weapon in that when firing the laser it causes an explosion that will appear in front of a missile. The other source believes in just making a shield like you would see in Star Trek or Star Wars.Plus I didn't read see this before but the cold plasma shield will also act as a cloaking device.
So maybe the ISS is just a fake, and there are massive cloacked ships orbiting the planet at this very moment... Hehe. Just read most of the articles, funny to see that they compare it to star trek. That may make it more easy to understand, but how serious will people take this now? I know I do, because I have studied chemistry for a while at school, but making an actual plasma shield is freakimg amazing. It requires so much power to keep the plasma in place. You can power an entire city with those amounts.
Yeah I'm going to need a link as well. I went to gate world but all they tell me is every episode that the Stargate people use something plasma like. Oh and in case there are people looking at this that are too lazy to click the sources, by cloaking they mean that you will be invisible to radar as long as the shields are up.
