Currently in beta Starcraft 2 does not have customizable keys.

So my question is should they allow players to customize keys how they are or only allow pre set keys to be used.

I personally think they should be allowed to some extent (a selection of key variations) for multiplayer and in campaign and for custom maps you can make them what ever you want.

Currently in Starcraft 2 I fail to see the NEED for custom keys!
Most units and upgrades and spells are positioned on the left side of the keyboard!

I wouldn't start learning a different setup, because that's totaly inconvenient when your playing elsewhere you'd have to change the custom hotkeys all the time!

Also, if everybody is limited to using only the default hotkeys.. what's the matter with that?
As long as your opponents have the same setup, it's pretty fair, and the only thing sperating you two is skill!

If I where to exaggerate the situtation and say that my daddy bought me these cool brainwave glasses that wouldn't require me to press any keys on the keyboard at all?
You wouldn't want to play against me, would you?

The only reason I'd see someone swap hotkeys is in Starcraft I. Because there, pylons are P, and that sucks butt! Personally, I didn't rearrange hotkeys at all playing SC.. well almost. In the end I changed probes to E and Dragoons to S etc. to practice somewhat for SC2.

Actually custom hot keys would be pretty cool for SC2. Cause for me when I played SC1 I tended to think like "I need zelots here so I press Z for some and I want some dragoons so I press D for them. Etc etc. And I'd like to be able to do something saimilar in SC2. I'm sure some people would not use the custom hot keys and others would love them.

If you don't like them, sure just don't use them. But if you like them and they are not there . . . I think you get my point. Then everyone can set up they hot keys just the way they like. And in short anything making SC2 a more intelligent experience to play is fun. :).

And about your comment of the glasses. You're talking about something only using access to. Cause your father bought them only for you. I see your point. But I'm more talking about if the glasses were available for everyone. And it's up to you if you chose to use them or not. The choice then is left up to the individual player.

The only thing I would use hotkeys for is maybe reassigning macro groups.

Being a WoW player, I am very used to my usual number row set up, which is 1 2 3 4 5, then 1-5 again with modifiers like alt, ctrl, or shift. If I could use this setup in starcraft it would be much easier to macro, as I often accidentally go to the wrong thing on the numbers further down the number row, which is usually bases and production buildings.

All in all, I don't see a need for hotkeys anywhere else. They are all pretty simple, and even beginners can figure out everything they need in about 5 games.
