That was some weird stuff man. Weird stuff. Any opinions on the ending from others? I personally didn't find it very satisfying at all.
I loved the movie, but I'm South African so I'm biased hehe I didn't mind the ending, although I agree it could have been something more "climactic".
The first half was amazing. The graphics were seamlessly integrated, and the pseudo-documentry feel was magnificent. Then it turned into Generic Action Move 2: This Time, it's Personal.
I saw the movie in theaters and I came away with basically the same impression as Fenix. At first it seems to be fresh, especially with the documentary style, and I absolutely loved the way that they portrayed the racism towards the prawns, but then it was just "Hey we found a ****load of alien weapons, lets see how many ways we can bloodily blow people up". But for a movie with that low a budget, its incredible what they managed to do with it. Has anybody seen the short film it was based off of?
*SPOILERS* Im a movie fanatic, and seen a lot of sci-fi, action cliches. But with District 9 there was a satisfied feeling for the ending. When they took the same guy who was racist and put in charge of mobilizing and basically putting the prones into the camps, weather they wanted or not, in the end he turned desperate and seeks aid from the same race he felt hostile off. And finally turning to a prone himself. That felt satisfied to me. Because Vikus was not a good person in the beginning, and i got a feeling that he got what he deserved in a very unique way, because of what he represented. A regular guy who despite just doing his job, enjoyed it to great length, just like that mercenary solder . And having his rely of the aliens as his only alies, really showed what a regular guy can become in desperation, and how extreme situations can get a person to do anything. What the movie did well was to go to the edge of Vikuses pychy and keep him there throughout the movie. Even though the movie played the old "oh jey have faith" stereotype, in that setting and in time where we can still relate to racism, it felt fresh and fitting. It showed that how no matter how people try to hide it, they are still very racial, and that it will pop out every chance it will get. Maybe i thought to much into it, but that just goes to the credit of the movie that it can be so nit picked thoroughly. And shows that you dont need a huge budges to make an awesome sci-fi (tansformers 2) but a great story is a must!
What I've been saying every single time. It's a good movie and worth watching but I am not amongst those who hype it up to be the best movie of 2009.
This. I absolutely loved the first part. Then he started to turn into an alien and everything went from bad to worse. I mean, everything was so original at the start. Then it turned into some kind of alien experiment cliche. Didn't like it. However, it was quite awesome to see how that weird black guy destroyed the military convoy and captured the guy. After that I was all like "USE THE %^@##$ MAGNET THINGY!!" when he used to battlesuit to escape later on. :s Oh and to see the military commander guy getting ripped apart in the end: that was something I had been looking forward to ever since I first saw the guy. ^^ Next movie: The Mist. gonna watch it now
I'd say it's definitely up there for one of the best movies of 2009. Hard to say it's the best, but you'd be insane to say it's not up there. Basically the parallels and issues dealt in it, the design of the Prawns, casting of actors, documented introduction were all perfect. To me the special effects of the weaponry was a little fruity, but that's just superficial. The documentary was great. The only problem with it was how it had to dissolve into something else because it'd be impossible to justly continue the journalistic theme with Safria's most wanted fugitive. In my opinion it's not a bad thing that they 'degraded' into, it's that it's a good thing that they started in such a perfect style. As for the ending, I read one reviewer who said, and I'm paraphrasing, 'if that was supposed to be a happy ending, I've seen happier', which absolutely pissed me off to no end because if a freaking film critic wasn't able to tell that it, in fact, was not a happy ending, or merely assumes that every film must have a happy ending, then I'm never taking another film critic seriously again. Half the point was that it wasn't a happy ending. It wasn't even really an ending to anything, besides the physical movie itself. Nothing had been resolved, really, Wikus was completely stranded, and there was a legal ****storm about the people exposing the MNU being sued for breach of contract. But nah, that must be their attempt at a happy ending. I mean, it's not like they could possibly be trying to comment on how the real world issues that they had based the film on are still present today and have not, in fact, been resolved. Nah. Couldn't be that.
@itza Happy endings suck anyway. I mean, it would feel way to forced if everything would have been suddenly solved in the end. However, you could speculate that at least the aliens had some luck. The whole world knows that they weren't being treated properly. Not only that, but help is under way as well. :/
Exactly. It was a logical point to end the movie, but it was by no means a 'happy' ending which tied up every little loose end. An ending like that would have sucked balls.
