Well I haven't been on recently in the past few months. I've been busy with schoolwork and extra work my parents force onto me such as studying for the SATs by remember 3,500 words. How can one even possibly remember 3,500 words, 1/4 of which I probably never use, and then recall them at will one year later when taking the SAT. It's baloney! I'd really like to spend more time enjoying life and having some fun instead of spending half of my life so far studying things for a grade that doesn't actually represent how smart I am.

So far this year, to be honest, has sucked. Two of my teachers aren't very good teachers, one so more than the other. He's my physics teacher. That's what kills me. He's a science teacher yet he can't teach. Isn't science the most important subject nowadays and yet the school can only hire teachers who make you learn from only the book instead of explaining it in class along with the book. The other teacher is okay. Algebra II isn't exactly easy to learn when the only examples you receive are the easiest problems and where other classmates grade work instead of the TA's or the teacher herself. There is so much work. Even the days I work diligently, without many interruptions/breaks, I still have to work till midnight or beyond. It's just tiring and really kills my next day because I'm so tired. Going on that statement, everyday is killed.

And then there's the people. There's always that one really smart, physical guy who brags about his grades. Get's extremely annoying especially when he doesn't shut up about it. Other than that, the people at my school are pretty good except a lot are rude. Especially the stupid freshmen. They stand in the middle of the walkway just talking. Right under my locker is a girl who shares her locker with maybe three other girls, who themselves bring their friends to the locker. It gets extremely annoying when I always have to wait for them to finish if I come after them and then I always move for them when they come after I arrive. Then one day... jeez... the nerve!!!! They complain about ME when I always move for them. They didn't talk to me directly, they were just talking to each other about how annoying it was to have someone with a locker above you.

Well, all in all sophomore year is not going well. I'm getting okay grades by my parents' standards and I don't understand anything in one of the classes with the bad teacher. I try to study by myself but I don't understand it. I don't understand my friends' explanations very well either. So I'm hoping for a change of luck soon. I think it's coming because the school year is being cut buy one week due to a money deficit. Woohoo right? Except now everything is pushed back a week and honestly, I kind of like school, just not the work.

Just needed to talk all of this out because I've been keeping it in so long and I heard or read or heard and read about how talking about your feelings can help you deal with your emotions. Oh, that reminds me, my hormones have still not died down. In fact, now I have a crush on like every cute girl I see. Crazy and annoying especially when some of them are your friends so whenever I talk to them I get all red faces and sweaty when a year ago I had no problem. Also, I'm starting to develop a weird personality. Now I talk funny compared with a year or two ago. I talk with lots of bigger, more "politically correct" words when I talk to people so I sound all formal. I don't like it.

Call this thread pointless, but I need to get this junk out of my head.

While I can't sympathize with the majority of your situation, I can second the thought of memorizing a bunch words to do well on the SATs as being a bunch of BS (though I somehow doubt you actually want to hear how to do well). Also, in my expierence with teachers, especially technical science teachers, the problem isn't so much a teacher is a bad teacher as students and the teacher aren't working on the same level. What really interests me though is what level is the physics class your in? I know my old high school pretty much required students to have completed pre-calculus before taking physics.

Yeah its always good to get things off your chest, otherwise it can come out at the wrong time and place. I ,however, keep it bottled up for when i fly into a rage and need an extra boost to beat something to pieces. Anyway, i know what you're going through, except for the locker part.

The only words that come to me when describing this year is torture and hell. Also, the level of physics is... I don't know. What levels are there? It's not like my physics is super advanced stuff, but the teacher just tells us to read the book and gives us labs on it without further explaining the things in the book.

That's what my math classes looked like in middle school. Except I had rather strict teacher in elementary so I breezed through it.

All I can say is good luck with all that work and problems. It's good that your parents want you to learn a lot and all, but they should really consider some more breaks/rewards for you.

The fact that hazing freshman is listed as a good thing about being a sophomore is a great reason why a lot of High Schools have problems.... Dt_L to answer your question about levels of physics there really is 3 levels:
-- Run of the mill "High School" physics; not very much math, more general concepts, if your a good little lemming you should pass.
-- High school Honor/lower end college level physics; relatively math intensive, you use several equations (equation sheets may be involved), if you do well you are better than the average high school student and you may even get college credit.
-- Physics with calculus; math intensive, calculus involved, if you pass (and pass some special test like an AP test) you likely get college credit.

Well, if you don't haze the freshmen they get cocky and start talking a lot of crap. Someones gotta get them out of that middle school phase.

@Jshep89: That 'tradition' of yours must be limited to USA then. I have never encountered any sort of hazing in my country appart from a rare occasions of bullying.

And more specificly it is only limited to some schools in the U.S. because I know it doesn't happen at my old high school either.

Exactly. I mean if there aren't hazings these kids end up talking so much bs, and the school loses its entire ranking system. I mean in my school we made sure the freshmen came last and the seniors came first. I mean I can't remember how many times I saw some freshmen just out of the 8th grade talking crap about the football team. Despite the fact we had the best team in the county, so in order to shut them up and teach them some respect. We did the hazings.

I mean thats just ONE of the reasons, and I know it sounds harsh but believe me if these kids don't learn it now they will be little trash talking panzies for ever. On a side note though I never hazed a freshmen who didn't deserve it. If they showed respect to the seniors and didn't talk a bunch of crap. I'd leave them alone. It's the loud ones that get hazed :)

Also, in some schools like mine which was a military school students had to earn their place amongst the population. Usually if a new student respects the ranks of others then they don't have much to worry about. If they do their PT's and don't get their barracks in trouble. They don't have to worry about it. However, if they come in thinking their tough talk down to higher ranking students and slack off? Yeah their gonna get hazed.

Just curious lucratus. What was your schools hazing method? I mean there is usually several methods, but usually a school has a certain one that is tradition. For mine it was have them name ten different cereals and every time they paused we'd hit em. Man that was fun times..

"talking crap about the football team. Despite the fact we had the best team in the county, so in order to shut them up and teach them some respect."

What the hell is wrong with you? That's simply despicable. You don't get to bully other students for not sharing your views or tastes.

And Americans wonder why the rest of the world thinks we are a bunch of brutes.... I agree with Higgs. You really haven't increased the perception of yourself or hazing in general Jshep.

He just wants people to show some respect to others who have worked hard to get to where they are now. What's wrong with that? Not seeing the problem, to be honest. It's better to get hazed on a school then talk crap to the wrong people later, simply because you haven't learned to shut up at the right moments. Seriously, people get stabbed these days for nothing.

Edit: Also, I doubt that he meant: "we would hit them", as in "we would break their freaking nose in the end"...

Aurora I think your missing the other main problem of "we would hit them" namely the "we" part. But let's jump back just a moment Jshep said a bunch of thugs in a military school would hit somebody when they couldn't name a cereal, because there was multiple bullies odds are the abused couldn't fight back and I somehow doubt that a group people willing to hit somebody over something as trivial as Jshep describes are pulling their punches.

I am not sure about Holland but in the U.S. even if was just one person being a bully once you start hitting people it becomes a crime called assualt. Hazing in general is despicable, committing a crime is something else, but Jshep takes the cake in calling a crime simple hazing. If someone is running there mouth you tell them to put up or shut up you don't forcfully shut them up.

Well I assume that the "hitting" would be punching somebody on the arm pretty hard. We used to do that just for fun all the time. It hurts for a while, but any police officer would call you a sissy when reporting it as a crime. But if he truly meant punching somebody pretty hard, then that's obviously unacceptable.

As for hazing in general, it's not always the stuff you see on documentaries. People don't always have to get hurt or whatever.

We used to have a few hilarious methods to make the little noisy kids stop bothering us. For example, almost every Dutch student comes to school on a bike, and it rains a lot here. That results in us having bike "parking spaces" with a few metal roof plates over them to keep everything dry. It's just hilarious to pick up a bike with two people, and set it on the roof, which is about 2 meters high. And the best part is that the janitor wouldn't even help getting the bikes off again. xD

Jshep left his statements open to interpretation but once you have a group of people "hitting" somebody else you are at the line between hazing and something else at the very minimum (most likey you have crossed into the realm of being bullies or worse).

I havn't seen any documentaries, my opinion is simply this just because someone is older than someone else doesn't give them the right to make the younger person's life hell.

Hazing can be good or bad, it depends upon the technique used and how you do it. If you're to gentle they dont learn anything, if you're to rough you break them, you have to use the middle point so they turn out right. Look at the Russian military, they turned out fine.

Though most people overboard it, that's where the bad rep comes from.
