This may sound noobish but here it is. Say my enemy has a thor somewhere on the map. I send say 1 stalker and 1 void ray against it. When my units get in range what will the thor automatically shoot at? Random? Void ray since its more dangerous? Stalker since it dies faster? And if you were to control the thor what would you shoot at? And also, a more general approach to the idea.. What are the most dangerous units for each race when ur facing an attack? I know it depends on what kind of army u have but what should you shoot down first? You can consider different scenarios. Thanks

I'll try to make a quick reply since this subject is not short.

Although for your first question, the Thor would shoot the void ray first. Why you might ask? It's the range, its air attack is longer than its ground.

Also, most people like to shoot down one of these over other units. Big targets, blobs of targets, units alone, and units with energy. It's just the unit with the most threat to your army really. Hope this helped.

I *think* the Thor will attack the first unit to either: a. get in its range of attack, b. attack the Thor first.

If I was the Thor, I don't think it'd matter.

Units have different priorities... in theory. In practice, virtually every unit (even the ultralisk) has a priority of 20. (In that case, units automatically target the first unit to either attack them or enter their targeting range.) Buildings usually have a priority of 19, and larvae have a priority of 10.

ok so the idea is when yo uwanna attack something big, send the cheap units in first and then attack with the expensive units. that way cheap units will die first. is this more or less correct?

That is correct. Unless the unit being attacked does splash damage or hard-counters the little ones.

Using zerglings to absorb siege tank fire would have been a smart strategy if siege tanks didn't do splash damage, for instance.

the units you want to kill first are either the units they are good at killing (ie collosus should shoot marines not tanks), and then units that can kill you (ie if you are terran with lots of marines kill that collosus however you can) as for what attacks what first, i believe the medivac has the highest priority in the game. so if it is in range they will get hit. which i imagine you can abuse, at higher levels than i.
