News from the web, just for you!
    And everyone else. Duh.

The founders of The Pirates Bay are busted!
After their trial, the Swedish court decided that the four founders of the large torrent search engine will be spending the next year in jail. They were sued for violating copyright laws on movies and music. -while only downloading software is illigal in Europe- Further, they have to pay 30 million kronen, which is about 2.8 million euros.

I don't think any of that money is going to developers or publishers in the gaming industry...=/

Even though it may be considered a show trial of questionable legality i support those silly swedes going to prison xD. However i doubt pirate bay is going to be closed down...

Since this is the news thread...Here is more recent news on piracy (of the copyright kind)

Fools, you wouldn't even be able to properly do your banking and taxes anymore with that punishment. It would probably cause more trouble then it will solve. Sarkozy must be getting desperate if he supports this.

In other news, a 9-year old boy jumped of a building. Their parents claim he did that because he wanted to imitate his favourite Wrestler from the Smackdown VS Raw game. The parents failed to report that the roof door lock was broken, that the game insists on not doing the moves yourself and that the games was for 16 years and up...

    In other news:
A DISABLED man packed explosives into his artificial leg and detonated inside the compound of an Afghan provincial governor today but managed only to kill himself.
The bomber hobbled into the heavily guarded compound of the governor in the western city of Herat and exploded his bombs after police fired at him, deputy provincial police chief, Delawar Shah Delawar, said.

"Today a suicide attacker, a disabled man who placed his bombs in his artificial leg, was able to enter the governor's compound. He exploded himself after our police fired at him," he said.

"The only casualty was the bomber."

    FAIL FAIL FAIL

I'd like to think that most people are no longer naive enough to blame incidents like this on video games just because of how the media reports it.

    In other news...

It's been no secret among the tech savvy that the amount of malicious programs targeting macs has been on the rise (though they have a lot of catching up to do), and that the OS isn't some impenetrable fortress but rather people just didn't care enough to target the smaller population. Apple even openly advised their users to get anti-virus after a little fiasco where they inexplicably removed an article from one of their researchers suggesting the same thing. Still the average mac user is blissfully unaware that they are defenseless without the proper technical knowledge or anti-virus software.

I expect mac users will start taking anti-virus more seriously now though, since the first confirmed attacks from a mac botnet have been discovered. When talking about malicious programs, a botnet is when a large number of infected computers (often in the thousands) have their resources hijacked in order to be used for whatever the virus creators purposes are. Usually they are used to covertly send spam, but can be used for things like DDoS attacks as well, which is how this one was found out.

P.S. In 2005, it was estimated that 50-80% of all email spam had been sent by botnets. That is a HUGE number considering how much spam email gets sent every day.

Hello Mac users. Welcome to the market of expensive anti-virus software! May the firewall be with you...

    ---------------------------------------------

Meanwhile in Munich, Germany, a self proclaimed Guru is busted. And not just because he was fake. Mr. Oliver Shanti turns out to like molesting -and worse- children. 314 of them, to be exact. The people who made him rich must feel pretty crappy now, but large book sites try to sell the last of his books for low prices before the news spreads.

Source is the Dutch site www.nu.nl, American sites seam to need some time to pick this one up.

    @the Mac malware thing:
There are no viruses for OS X. The botnet was created by a trojan which requires users to willingly download and run it. Also, there's free malware detection software out there for OS X already. I will continue to enjoy not worrying about malware, thank you very much.

In other news, Stephen Hawking has been hospitalized with a chest infection and is described as "very ill." He's had the infection for over half a month and had canceled a trip to Arizona State University because of it.

The OSX feature that requires you to confirm whenever you install something is no safer than UAC on windows vista.

You don't need anti-virus on a PC either if the user knows what they are doing, problem is there are a heck of a lot of mac and PC users that don't, and even with features like UAC and password prompts, your average joe is probably going to let things run that they shouldn't.
