It seems that there is unlimited outrage in New York City over this.

    What do you guys think?

Freedom of religion. People need to get over their "outrage" over this. Being of Islamic faith doesn't make you a terrorist anymore than being Christian, and Christians have done (and continue to do) some pretty nasty stuff as well.

Personally I'm agnostic and against religion in a general way, but I support peoples' rights to believe in what they want, and practice it privately. If we allow the building of churches for the various christian denominations, then we should allow mosques too.

I understand why the good folks of NYC are riled up. Makes sense to me. However, most of their ire is due to misinformation and straight up lies from certain 'news' sources (Cough cough).

As for me, I couldn't care less either way. I don't see how someone building a mosque in New York affects anyone except the people in the area.

Extremism and stuff like the Westboro Baptist Church picketing places that were totally inappropriate to picket almost makes me develop a distaste towards religion.

Yesterday, I was following a story about how the Westboro Baptist Church picketed the ComicCon in San Diego.

As for the mosque story, I'm a bit iffy towards building one so close to the WTC site.

if it was a Westboro church, outrage would be justified. A mosque? not so much. T here were probably muslims working in the WTC as well when it got pulverized, ya know

I read that its ment to be finished on 9/11 next year, according to officials.

Nah, but I personally think this would be ridiculous. A huge mosque at Ground Zero? No thanks. Perhaps it is to get New York a pretty skyline with its minarets. Ugh. I'd rather have no faith.

I don't support the construction of any religious buildings, but if one is being built, I have no preference for what religion it belongs to, other than how it impacts my life if it is near by, such as: Will it be an eyesore? Will it be noisy? Will there be swarms of strangers to my currently tranquil surroundings?

It's in the heart of New York, I doubt it sticks out over the other stuff, it won't be louder than Taxi's and you can hardly call it tranquil :p

Not necessarily. If the city wants to stop it they are going to need a better and facially neutral reason than "zomg terrorists". Otherwise the courts will step in and gavel-slap them upside the head.

^ Isn't that more like finding an excuse than finding a reason?

This whole story is just something the media is using to stir up hostile feelings, and recklessly reinforcing the misconception that there is a war against islam.

Jasmine by media do you mean Fox News? I'm pretty sure all the liberal networks wont advertise this story. Just saying.

khayman, the city won't have to do a thing to screw the mosque over. there's enough dumbasses in new york to go around vandalizing that place every night and blame american muslims for the terrorist attacks.

Fortunately all they have to do is to get this in front of a court and they get a free pass. And so they should. First ammendment anyone?

I take back my rant against the guy in charge of building the community center. I knew that there was incredible amount of misinformation about this project but I thought I got all the facts correct. Thankfuly Keith Olbermann went over it on MSNBC and filled in few of the last gaps (namely the whole controvery over the name Corduba) and I can now proudly say I can see NOTHING wrong with the building now (except that it's going to be used to propagate bronze-aged mythology as truth). In fact I want it to be there so the backward nutters get a wiff of what America stands for.

I'm pretty sure almost every major news outlet is owned by News Corp now. Would it matter what source it is? Almost every news source I see on "broadcast" TV is talking about it.
