The Two Week Game Creation Thread

    This week's topic is:

    Zombie Mania

Finally! A chance to see one of your own ideas made into a bite-sized game!

Here's how it will go down:

    - Every other week, a new game idea is presented.
    - The best ideas will then be chosen and be put up for voting.
    - At the end of the week, the topic with the most votes is chosen.
    - Then, in one week, I'll create a video game based on the idea.

This finished game will then be posted here, and a new game idea will be presented!

Lol, sure. I'll be able to get on this weekend, and maybe monday.
My username @ useast is Marine_PowerX.

To get this discussion started, how about a game where you control a marine and you have to survive an onslaught of Infested Terrans?

make something like boxhead. your trapped in a room and you need to kill all of the infested terrans that spawn and run at you to beat the level.

you should have a bunch of different starcraft weapons that you can pick up too, like the flamethrower, a rifle, vult grenades, and a wraith laser

Congratulations. You survived being bit by a zombie. Kinda.

The main character is a half-zombie half-human character with mixed abilities/attributes.

okay so this is what we have so far. How about a 3rd person RPG shooter. Every kill lands you exp and cash, which you can then use to modify the player's various attributes and upgrade weapons. Actually, cash never made sense in an apocalyptic scenario. How about... hmm... not sure what to substite for :p

As for the character, he's been fortunate enough to be partially immune to the zombie virus. As such, he's rendered in a state where his body is constantly deteriorating, but he is still in full control of himself. Since his brain is deteriorating as well, he needs... something... to continue on living, and eventually cure himself.

    Any other ideas?

Well, he could be collecting blood. Makes the most sense to get for killing enemies and to sustain his half-dead state.

Hmm.. If he's going to be collecting blood, do you think it'd be worth making it a bit prototype-esque as well? Instead of experience, he could gain improved upgrades by consuming a certain number of zombie types. For example, in order to get improved speed, you would have to kill / consume, say, 20 fast zombies for level 1 speed, 50 fast zombies for level 2 speed, etc.

urgh, hate it when you need to defeat specific enemies out of a mass to level in a certain aspect. Its not that its such a bad idea, its that it always needs to be balanced by limiting the number of upgrades and thus you need to not to shoot certain enemies who you can handle easily

I don't see why there needs to be a cap. The more zombies that are killed, the more powers you get. If that does become a problem, though, it'd still be possible to just make it so that powerups are really obscure, and the player has to go out of the way to retrieve them. This was done in a similar fashion in metroid prime. The game would provide just enough easy-to-find powerups to get through it, but all the extra missile and health tanks had to be found by exploring a lot deeper than normal into the level.

    kinda reminds me of amsterdoom.

basically, you find a new weapon each stage by just doing it, first stage you have a magnum, second a bigger gun, third a machine gun, fourth a bazooka, and fifth a kick-*** bio weapon.
But if you are good at finding secrets you can get machine gun in first(i did and its fun to kill first level enemies with third level weapons)

Yeah, there's a bunch of games that follow the same theme in that regard.

Alright, anyone have ideas about the middle / end of the storyline?

We know the guy gets infected in the beginning, but we don't know what goes on while he's trying to cure himself, or how the game ends.

in the middle he meets his former wive, who is now a vampire queen and the final boss is his daughter who is a zombie vampire werewolf.

I think there should be a major choice in the middle of the storyline between following his new zombie roots or his old human roots, thus leading to two different endings.

    Edit: Some gameplay ideas.

An energy-like bar called Bloodcraze. Basically, it jumps up by like 20% for each kill. It slowly drops down as you exit combat, then starts to drop faster the longer you are out of combat. Therefore, if you kill five-six enemies in rapid succession, the bar will max out, which will make you Bloodcrazed. This increases your speed, integrity, and damage as the zombie virus temporarily takes over your brain due to the increased violence.

Enemies could have a chance to 'drop' an item called Sterile Blood. This item heals the hero. They also have a chance to drop Tainted Blood, which increases one zombie-related statistic of your choice by one level. (The Tainted will be much more rare.) If the zombie/human storyline paths are divided, there could be Infected and Clean enemy types. Infected will have the chance to drop Pure Tainted Blood, which gives 3 zombie-related statistic single-level points, whereas Clean will have the chance to drop Pure Sterile Blood, which will heal the hero completely no matter what.

    More later.

Ah, I see. So the player will have to fight both people and zombies, which will both be fighting each other. In this case, then maybe the player could side, or at least blend in with the rest of the zombies, and they would only turn against you when you attacked one of them.

When you say item, do you mean something that will be able to be stored in an inventory? Or something that you simply walk over to use. As of now, I'm leaning towards simply touching a powerup / energy from a defeated enemy to use it.

Oh, and how about, for a major decision, in the middle of the game the player is very weak, and requires sterile blood to continue on. The only normal people he sees are his family. The player must pick between his humanity and his vitality, which will influence the rest of the game. This might be a bit too dark, so if you have any other ideas, I'd love to hear em.

    Edit:
I made some concept art, and, unfortunately, it's terrible. I guess I'm much more adept at programming than making art :p.

Here's just an example of how it looks like:

I don't like inventories. So yes, powerups and items should be use-on-touch.

I like your choice idea. If he chooses humanity, he will gain super-soldier support to keep him alive. If he chooses vitality, he loses most of his humanity and becomes mostly zombie. But a zombie that can still think as a sentient being. So a smart zombie.

BUMP TO THE TOP OF SPACE JUNK.

Anyway. Won't be back until Sunday, so don't expect any more input on this from me until then.

    Ah, alright.

I'm going to begin work on this today, and we'll see how it goes from there. Since I've never done anything like this before, my end goal in all of this will be to have a 2-d platformer with non-broken physics. Once that's in place, I can begin worrying about the art, then the story, then the rest of the resources, such as sound effects and music. The first post claims that there will be some sort of vote in order to agree on a single idea, but since only one idea has really taken root, there's no need for that, so feel free to continue to add any ideas you feel are relevant / cool.

EDIT: If anyone knows any non-royalty images / music / sfx related to the subject, it'd be awesome if you could post some links. It'd also be awesome if someone could be willing to help out with the art (although it probably won't happen :p ).
