I was wandering through the Internets today and came across an interesting article on Chow.com about some vegan restaurants that are actually normal restaurants most people would go to but something caught my eye. A restaurant whose very basis of existence is dishes made with meat substitutes.

I find that strange and ask this of any vegetarians and vegans: Why oh why if you have given up eating meat and other animal byproducts would you want to eat a facsimile?

I have no problem eating vegetarian or even vegan food so long as you know how to cook (some people I know try to push some odd stuff on me though I have had some odd meat dishes before as well so that statement extends to everyone). Tofu burgers and tofu turkeys ad what not seem to me to be all kinds of strange. They don't taste like meat and the texture is different and a lot of it doesn't even look like meat (none of it dos once you cut into it) so whats the point of passing it off as a meat substitute. If you have given up eating meat why substitute in the first place? Why not just eat a meatless dish?

well, some religions think that the meat(or the whole animal itself) of a certain animal is special, like in India, they wont eat cow meat because in their religion cows have somethging to do with Buddha. other vegi people will eat fish, and such, it all depends on how much they believe in the vegi. life, i guess.

Well I'm not asking why one becomes vegitarian/vegan. I already know about many of the numerous reasons. What I want to know is why you would want to eat something that is made to look similar to something else you won't eat.

Its like saying "I hate pets and will never want to own one" and then buying a robotic dog to keep you company

Usually the case with most vegetarians is not that they don't like meat, they don't like its health effects or they don't eat it for animal rights or religion. So they could still like the way it tastes but they don't like the real meat so they go with plant-based fake meat.

Maybe they want to look cool like a meat-eater XD

or they just like the taste.

or perhaps they were once meat-eaters then turned vegetarians and they didn't want a meatless burger..
I guess its all up to personal choice.

I find, vegetarians make me laugh, mainly because of their stance on meat being so ridiculus.

    1. If they hate eating it because they think its cruel - Do i even need to go into how ignorant this view is?
    2. They hate eating it because they think its uhealthy - Lol

Humans evolved to eat meat, hence certain teeth designed to be good at such a thing, denying yourself meat is ignorant, regardless of your stance on political and philosophical views.

Well no need to get all angry at the world Babmer...this isn't a deep philisophical issue here.

Some people just don't want to eat meat. I like meat a lot, but I try to cut down on it because I don't want to make it into a habit of eating only meat. Too much of any type of food is just bad for your body. Except for beans and rice...you can't get too much of beans and rice. It's the staple of my diet :p

My take on this is "Moderation in everything you do."
You should eat meat, however you should not eat a steak every day.
To me vegetarianism shows a lack of moderation since you diet is not balanced

Moderation in everything except rice and beans you mean :)

I don't know. Some people are vegetarians just because they don't like meat. I know people who are able to be vegetarians and still be able to get their necessities such as Protein and Iron.

What I don't get is how people can eat stuff such as Steak and eggs every morning. Granted, steak and eggs is one of the most awesome things ever, but still. I'm perfectly content with eating fruit and jazz in the morning.

    You eat music for breakfast?

I understand not eating meat for not liking the taste but what I don't get is people not eating meat for "health reasons" True it is unhealthy to eat excessive amounts of meats but getting rid of an entire food group is over compensating and unless you are strict about replacing the protein and taking vitamin supplements to replace the vitamins you can't get from plants it can be just as unhealthy as eating a steak per day.

Moral reasons is a cop out since there are places with free range animals.
I also believe that if you have moral objections to the method where animals are packed to tight to move then eating free range animals is the right thing to do. If you stop eating meat then you disappear from the market but if you eat free range animals it applies pressure to farmers to take up that method or go out of business so the more people choose the right farms as opposed to stopping consumption entirely things might actually change.

I agree with every bits of the comments of BOP, this discussion got interesting points.

I am not sure about this though: unless you live in a country with a very poor food culture, here in western Europa, there are so much types of meat, so much types of cookings and packagings (*), that you can decently not claim "I don't like meat", just because of the taste. It only shows a lack of knowledge on the subject in my opinion, or an excessive level of demand, or a strange point of view about your health and our world.

(*) : I don't really know about the rest of the world though, this is just that only around me, I already see plenty of points regarding this topic.

I wasnt angry at the time i posted this xD, did my post give off that kind of feel? ;(

The argument that "some people just don't want to eat meat" is, well silly? is there a point of view or reason that i covered in my post that doesnt suggest why refusing to eat meat is a rather ignorant thing to do? A point to keep in mind: Im not arguing that not eating meat is bad for you, im arguing that the reasons for deciding to not employ meat in any form into your diet are largely ignorant!

regardless, yes i agree that eating anything IN EXCESS is bad ;p, especially meat,
