It would be nice if units left tracks and trails when they pass. This would add a lot more to strategy. For example if one player sees that there are tank trails in the direction of his or his ally's base with his observer, he would be warned that there is a siege tank attack on the way. All the units would leave different trails, for exaple colossi would leave holes in the ground made by his spiky legs, tanks would live straight lines, stalkers would leave smaller holes than immortals and so. Hydras could leave trails like those zig zag lines the serpents leave in the desert.

Small units like lings ore marines should leave no trails. This is because they are not heavy enough, and because they are usually many of them, and lots trails would slow down the game a bit.

Of course, in installation or in space platform, there shouldnt be any tracks left.

This would be visually pleasing and a strategical improvement.

It should depend on the terrain.  No tracks on concrete but DEEP tracks in mud.

How would you deal with the Ghost and DT though?

I said light units shouldnt leave tracks. So it wouldnt really interfere with cloak.

Also tracks shouldnt last more than 15 seconds or so, the map would be a mess if they lasted forever, like something raped by a cat.

15 seconds isn't enough to track someone by at that point it then becomes just more eye candy. If you want to be able to follow it make it a minute or 2

I like it. Actually not a bad idea at all.

But there will of course be the argument that it will be much harder to sneak attacks than before. Unit positions could be relatively easily determined.

Not nescessaarrily. If they line up perfectly you will only see one or two sets of tank tracks and if they dont a large group could leave enough overlapping tracks to make it hard to get a number from

this could be a better way of detecting cloaked units as opposed to the sorta misaligned sight they cause. I like it bro.

This already exists in WC3... units leave a trail behind that dissapears after 5-20 seconds, I think. And if you honestly think you are going to walk around the map with your face pressed against your screen looking for tracks... you're living a dream world....

This is a good idea actually. Although it's probably a safer bet to use detectors in a real game.

I like it, it would make some terrain very fun to play and make recon for outer bases much easier. Agree with above that concrete or rock should not leave tracks except for the huge units.

Footprints in SC2 - tactical uses?

I thought, on soe terrain types, like snow, mud and grass, the units would leave different footprints, which their enemies can spot, and take advantage of them.

    Here are longlivefenix's Ideas
the unit tracks sounds really good like you see these huge footprints and you think thor
you see many different irregular tracks you think many different irregular zerg
that would be really cool because the experienced players will follow the tracks back to your base or even more experienced players will make false paths to try to confuse other players

This would give a new face of scouting, and an other thing to take care of. You could also imagine units, which make fake footprints or hide other units's.

    Any other ideas?

Re: Footprints in SC2 - tactical uses?

thanks for posting that idea here

i think that the mud should make the footprints dissipate faster due to the what in the mud seeping in faster and the snow footprints should go away faster based on how much it is snowing in the game and in sand the footprints would be harder to see

Yes I thought about this too, but that is maybe too many thing to keep in mind, so I would be happy with only one, perament term till they disappear.

I like this idea. It would definetely ADD more strategy and I'll do anything to make Starcraft 2 more realistic, its already a very UNrealistic game :(

What do you mean Gm_k, the game takes place in an age where People fight against aliens :) It is science fiction :)
And with the cliff climbers, jumpers the game starts to be more realistic.
Ok, the graphic needs a makeover, I agree, I don't like the clay buildings, with the toylike colours, but with every screenshot it gets better
