I got up this morning and was thinking about having the unit attack radius showing in the form of a green line as a perimeter for new players so if they want to place siege tanks, they would have better due to the attack radii or whether they want to drop ground units in their base and wondered how to approach it. For enemy units there would be a red circle while a ally would have a blue circle

It shouldn't take long to implement, just put it in the settings
and to put it in the game all it would take is 1 circle for most units while 2 for siege tanks or any thing else with minimum range

What do you think, is it a good idea?

Well, I guess it could be a cool thing for single player tutorial missions.. but you just cant put that on multiplayer or the circle SPAM would shroud the world in red and green wootnez

    Tutorials only please.

    Would cause too much lag.

What is your solution for more then one unit getting selected, like tanks and marines. Would be too confusing for that.

Showing the enemy range is a definite no, and I would say for allies as well. For your own units, only as an option with a toggle in single player strictly.

there should be a button to activate a sircle on a single unit that ur selected on. like the (-) or (+) on the number pad on the right side of the keyboard. something cloase to your mouse hand if need be. that doesnt sound TOO complecated.

its a good idea just needs to be implemented in a fashionable way that wont suck up the game play. I like the direction of that idea, seeing a units range insted of trying to guess it. oh and melee units wont have this since there oviously melee...

I think that it would be a great idea for tutorial, so that someone new to the game could get a since of range for different units. But for campaign and multiplayer, it would make it a little to difficult. Like darkone said, it would be too confusing when you selected more than one unit.

But the general idea is great. I like what i2new said, about the (+) or (-) buttons. Lik in the middle of a battle you have a siege tank sitting in the middle of the battle field and you would like to know the range, hit the (+) to activate it and hit the (-) to deactivate it. Great idea, really, maybe something Blizzard could consider in the other 2 games since this one is not that far from completion.

While information like this could be valuable to an AI, and in conjunction with other aids, would admittedly very useful information for an AI to utilize. But for human players, I feel that good judgement is an important part of the game.

Range isn't a hard thing to comprehend, and the specific range of the different units is learned through experience. If it shows distance rings, even in a tutorial, it only impedes that learning because you rely on the rings more than developing your own judgement.

Maybe they can put it in like a little video showing a mini skirmish between some units in the main menu (not during a match) so you can get a general idea where is its max range etc

My words, allowing to use these circles in multiplayer would remove a part of the game.

That and most people can judge after playing for awhile how far units can attack or be attacked.

Huh? I don't see how it would be such a big deal. It's done in Supreme Commander, and the game doesn't seem to have any issues with it. I'm kinda wondering why everyone seems to think it would tax the system?

I can see why you'd worry about it cluttering the UI- it does.

I can't see why it would cause multiplayer to be imbalanced- all players would have it.

That said, I think this mechanic is already in the game. I only remember it being used for building placement, though.
I want to say that there was a toggle that would activate it for units, too, but I can't remember clearly enough.

    I agree with Neon.
More circles wont tax a computer that runs SC2

I didnt say the multiplayer would be imbalanced 10-neon, but tic-tac-toe isnt imbalanced either, just uninteresting. Why was sc1 such a great game? Because it was hell complicated but easy to learn, thats the same with chess.

Are you implying that the majority of StarCraft complexity arises as a result of players not knowing the exact range of their units?

    Lol, this thread is amusing.

I said it first, the easiest thing to do that would please everyone is make it a toggle option, the player decides if they need it on or off.

No, but a part of it. Actually its not worth for me to use anymore power trying to explain it to you, as I know from former discussen's that you never listen. So ill just resign and let you win. Hope you are happy now.
