WCG 2007 Review

Mokon, staff member of our friend, gamereplays.org, had written wonderful review about WCG 2007 in Seattle. He starts from this year's WCG coverage, continues with StarCraft competinion, giving us information about famous StarCraft gaming stars, and finishes with information about next year's WCG.

WCG 2007 In Review

The 2007 World Cyber Games has been over for a week now, but letâ€™s take a moment to look back over what happened this year and what will be happening in the year to come. For those of you who donâ€™t know about the World Cyber Games, it is the largest cyber gaming festival and competitive tournament in the world. Starting in January of each year, the committee for the WCG decides what games will be played in the tournament that year. Players from around the world then begin to work their way up through the ranks of gamers: starting in their regional qualifiers, moving on to national champions, and then moving on to the grand finals in a host city. This year there were twelve games selected including Starcraft, Warcraft, C&C3, and Age of Empires 3 coming from the real time strategy genre. 1.6 millions gamers took a shot through the preliminaries, 700 of whom advanced to the grand finals in Seattle, USA.

The number of players competing in Starcraft this year was down slightly over past years numbers since less and less companies are willing to sponsor players given a game like Starcraft that is so old. Thirty-eight players competed in this yearâ€™s Starcraft competitions and, as always, Korea was favored to win. There were quite a few interesting matches. In the Round of 16 matches we saw the famous Polish gamer draco going up against fellow country member, Dreiven. After his defeat in this game he announced his retirement from Starcraft forever. As the game ages more and more legends bow down. It will certainly be interesting to see which ones move on to Starcraft 2 and which new legends arise.

In the round of 8, we saw Stork defeat fellow Korean Hwasin meaning that the Koreans were not be able to take all three medals in Starcraft as they did last year. Also in the round of 8, much to everyoneâ€™s surprise, sAviOr was eliminated by the Chinese gamer, CN-PJ. sAviOr is currently the number one rated Korean Starcraft player according to KeSpa. In the Semi-Finals, we saw the Ukrainian player, Ra_Ukraine defeated by CN-PJ and the German, Mondragon, defeated by the Korean Stork. In the 3-4 match Mondragon would take 3rd place defeating Ra_Ukraine. Finally, in the finals, none other than the Korean Stork took gold while CN-PJ had to settle for silver. GameReplays was there live at the World Cyber Games and, to say the least, the final matches were quite exciting. (Expect a photo gallery from the WCG in the coming days.) No one from Canada, Australia, or the United Kingdom made it into the round of 16 and the only player from the United States that did was eliminated in that first round by Mondragon.

This yearâ€™s World Cyber Games is now over but planning has already begun for 2008. The WCG Grand Final during 2008 will be hosted in Cologne Germany at the Messe. Cologne is one of the largest cities in Germany with a population of just under one million. It is considered to be a cultural and artistic center in Europe. It will certainly be a great place for the worldâ€™s largest video game tournament. As for the role of Starcraft and Starcraft 2 in next years games both are listed on the official polls for the World Cyber Games. It seems almost certain that Starcraft 2 will not be completed early enough to be used in the 2008 WCG but it would be foolish to think that it will not be in future years. One interesting point this brings up, however, is the future of Starcraft in the WCG. This year, as stated above, many players had trouble getting sponsors for such an old game. In 2008 it seems certain that this will get even worse. With Starcraft 2 most likely making the roster of games for 2008, one may speculate that 2008 will be the last year this timeless classic will be in the World Cyber Games. I guess everyone will have to wait for a year and a half more before it is known.
