February 23, 2009--With a head like a fighter-plane cockpit, a Pacific barreleye fish shows off its highly sensitive, barrel-like eyes--topped by green, orblike lenses--in a picture released today but taken in 2004. The fish, discovered alive in the deep water off California's central coast by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), is the first specimen of its kind to be found with its soft transparent dome intact. The 6-inch (15-centimeter) barreleye (Macropinna microstoma) had been known since 1939--but only from mangled specimens dragged to the surface by nets. Source: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/...transparent-head-barreleye-picture/index.html I find this amazing to say the least and in a weird way it is beautiful. To see a photo of the fish look at the source link. What do you guys think about this crazy looking fish?
That fish is very pretty it's face is kind of adorable too, the snout reminds me of a dolphin, a little... I wonder what function that dome-thing has for it... but considering some of the stuff you can find in the sea, it's not really all that surprising
I remember reading about this fish. Yeah it's only blind spot it below it body because it's eyes are in that dome which allow it to see in practically all directions.
um....transparent faced monsters with odd looking brains? ok back to subject, what is it called....Transparent head?
the reason it looks like it's glowing is because you can see through it's head and the way the light reflects in it makes it look like it's glowing. so technically during the day it glows but yeah at night it looks like it's not there.
Ah the Goblin Shark, very few of those are ever seen. I think the longest one to live in captivity was like a week.
