Hm.... I'll admit I have not read any of the books, but being in middle school when the first book came out it's hard not to know anything about this. I just have a hard time imagining what parents are going to say? I don't know about Europeans, as they are more comfortable about sexuality, but the Christian south of the U.S. is already wanting to ban these books for witchcraft, this doesn't really help. Thoughts?
XD I love how people make such a big deal out of books. I mean, this isn't even a scathing breakdown of the political climate, it's a book about people who go to a magic castle, wave stick around, and make things fly.
I find it sad how after hundreds of years people have still not figured out that in most cases censorship causes more harm and trouble than the censored item.
Wow, I read every Harry Potter book at least twice, and not once did Dumbedore seen gay to me. But why should people care so much. Its a book about wizards, not Dumbledore's sexual preferences. I don't see why fan clubs would realy think about that kind of stuff. As Fenix said, its a story about people going to a magic castle to learn how to be wizards or witches. Even with this news, I still will watch the movies and read the books when I have the time to do so.
.....Something tells me I don't want to read the explicit fan fiction that article is talking about. On another note though it really doesn't matter about Dumbledore's sexual preferences its a fantasy book and probably one of the best fantasy books ever written, and this is coming from a devout southern (texan) Christian
Personally i'm not interested in the sexuality of the characters at all, but it is a little odd that there's absolutely nothing in the books to indicate dumbledore is gay at all. I reckon it's just a stunt by the author to promote her personal agenda in support of a certain section of society. It would actually be illegal to ban the book in Britain or anywhere else in the EU solely because of any supposed gay reference (except in schools). Is it easy in the states to ban books for this sort of thing?
^ the books couldn't be banned from print - merely from schools, or at most from getting the "children's book" label... personally I agree that it's probably just a stunt by the author to publicize a cause she supports... it's not necessary for the character, and there's no reference to it in the books... and yeah, when you make something off limits, or taboo, that just makes it more interesting to most people... nothing is going to make people wonder about something more than putting a fence around it Well, if it got leaked that Raynor has a thing for Zeratul, you'd prolly care a bit. I don't think it's odd that the die-hard fans are that concerned about the characters.
I think some fans are going to be dissapointed. Not because of the sexuality, but because it's a children's book in a nice cosey children's style universe. The whole gay character thing is a crossover into real life that breaks the 'magic' (no pun intended). It would be the same if the author said there are hints that two of the teacher's at Hogwarts were having it off behind the bikesheds between chapters.
You mean the broom closet (lol), I never once read of a bike in the book. Maybe if they flew.....and had no wheels......and were made of wood.....
I found it really amusing when I first read this on my phone. I personally want to go back and "gay-dar" my was through the books I think its fine...it more or less really is a huge tolerance lesson hidden under 7 books. Well guys...get ready to hear from the Christian groups! :army: *bunkers down*
