What if the voices are always talking, but not everyone can hear them? What if insane people aren't really mentally ill, but are more perceptive? How would your perspective on asylums change?

*Disclaimer: Obviously, this is not to be taken as my views. This is a simple 'What if?' scenario for pure debate*

Then, instead of the insane being cast out by society as a whole, we would worship them, and make them our evil overlords. Obviously, anyone can pretend that they can hear the voices as well. But the insane people would be too insane to notice any change in the world order and continue living as they always did. They rest of us, however would listen to their insane ravings all day and make our judgments based completely on those, similar to the way people followed superstitions a thousand years ago. Society would then collapse, as everyone will continue to follow the crazed ravings and not bother keeping up the infrastructure, developing new technologies, and other things necessary for a healthy society. In the resulting chaos, a small group of people will rebel against the insane and attempt to create their utopian society, which when created, turns ouit to be nothing more than a Communist dictatorship.

I'd like a serious answer next, if at all possible.

My answer was serious until it got to the Communist dictator part.

Interesting huh? I was also wondering about this for a very long time. But I don't think anyone would give a RIGHT answer, maybe just a valid one.

 for making this thread. :)

i was going to reply before the above one's were posted... but i dont feel credible enough in this area to speak out....

ill have a crack at it anyway though

my understanding... is that everyone hears voices. if you think about it, you do, quite regularly. Its just your thoughts, and your conscious and uncoscious thoughts are usually recognised by most people as just that, thoughts.

people suffereing from mental health issues associated with voices, have the same voices we hear, though the difference is they can not distinguish these voices as thoughts and perceive them as more 'real' voices.

The stereotypical stigmas, 'the voices told me to kill' kind of thing, .... well people suffereing mental health issues associated with voices are often suffering from other mental health issues such as depression, anxiety attacks, drastic mood swings, and often intense living conditions too, perhaps domestic violence.

So these voices can in turn be more negative, demeaning, violent, cursing, and like i said people with such conditions struggle to distinguish them from reality.

Everyone gets these voices, some kiddo might be stressed out and will have the thought 'run away'. Someone suffering mental health issues might have the same thought, but perceive it as a real voice, not just a thought.

I'm finding this difficult to explain, and im actually not sure if im correct.

This is my vague understanding however,... tell me im wrong thats fine i dont stand by this i dont claim to be 100% certain. Though it seems to make some rough sense to me, my aunt suffers skitzophrenia, i really should research this stuff.

As far as my perspectives on assylums go.... i again havnt really experienced anything to form opinions... though i do think it is unfortunate. If there were unlimited resources, in an ideal world, people suffering from mental health issues would be addressed individually, in terms of one's emotional, mental, and physical needs. Shove someone in an assylum, they may receive medical treatment required, but other needs are not always met... it is an unfortunate and unavoidable discrimination and marginalisation. I do not claim to have a better system....

A person is not their illness, they are their own person, suffering from an illness.

It is a shame that an illness such as this is capable of consuming someones whole life.

for me everyone is insane, i think of it as a scale, to the left not so insane to the right very insane this way you can 'become' insane, because to me right now the doctors say you are insane or not insane but where is the line? in my thinking there is no line, so in a sence we are all insane as ijffdrie.

This reminds me of TES:4 oblivion's expansion, you go to the realm of madness with Sheogorath and do stuff.

If this were true, then It would be a bit late to change it, the "crazy" people are all ready under lock and key, and no one listens to them because hey, they're "crazy".

just a thought.... if normal people are actually the "insane ones", and the insane ones are the normal people, then what if we were all insane??? does that mean that were all normal now???

When the amount of 'abnormal' outweighs the 'normal', then the 'normal' becomes the 'abnormal.' So, even if we really are the crazy ones, because there's more of us then them, we're the normal ones.

headstock....What you say is interesting. We all have that kind of thought, but we're not sure where they come from, right? Well, I am, and I'm sure Bizzaro is.....That kind of thought comes from your subconscious. It's a representation of desires that your mind will not consider rationally, therefor, your mind shoves them off to the side. I'm talking about totally foreign thoughts that you mind invents, not off of your own thoughts, but off of your experiences.

I wonder, maybe if you started imagining such voices concoiusly, you'd eventually really start hearing them? Either emitted by subconciousness (difficult word!) or completely external ones. That's be cool. But you'd be crazy then too... I'd try to find out but I have job and school I'd like to keep for now ^^

Our mind is infinitely more powerful than anything you could imagine. We can do all that we can do, with only 10% of it.

Another interesting thing.....We never forget ANYTHING, we just often do not have the ability to access that memory.

    You shouldn't be a stereotype person ;D
but what if there's a orc behind you? what if there's a car drive pass?

Oh yeah abnormal things are when things are different from our 'normal', through our theories, our science ;)

If I found out there's a human behind me right now I'd freak out. But seriously I have this 'orc' thing all planned out since long ago. Actually it can be nearly anything not just orc, like vampire, werewolf etc. If it were to attack me I'd burn it with a fireball. Impossible you say? Well so are orcs! I a freakin orc can sneak up on me, there's no reason why I wouldn't be able to burn it to a crisp ;]
