I don't know, but what I do know is that any significant event (if any) on that day is going to be caused by the very existence of this prophecy and not because of what this prohpecy is based upon. (Actually Mayans never did say anything interesting is going to happen in 2012 but arguing that to New Age crackpots might be rather futile.)

The Mayan Calendar is thought to end on December 21st, 2012. But it's a freakin calendar /facepalm.

I mean, just because the 2009 calendar ended just now on the 1st of January, didn't mean that the world was about to explode (seen in retrospect). Well, I can agree that a roman lunar calendar isn't the exact same product as a mayan millenial one, but still. It's not like the Twilight Zone, where you can make real objects go away simply by using a pencil or eraser xD

It was recalculated sometime back in the 90's IIRC. Anyways, it never says 'end of the world,' just 'end of an age.'

I think it'd be cooler if the world ended in 2150, at the start of the new astrological age of Aquarius, and the end of Pisces. 2012 seems like an off number to me...

To correct myself: The alignment of sun, earth and galactic plane happens every year. It is few degrees off the center for most of the time. So I was not perfectly accurate.

However, what significance does that sort of alignment (to which we get extremely close every single year) on our life whatsoever?
