Anything after HoMaM 2 fails. I still remember when i was like 6-7 i wanted to know what dismiss meant so i dissmissed my only dragon T_T (In the original they were so cute ^^)
I consider 3 to be the peak of the series. 4 was by far the worst and 5 just completely missed the atmosphere of the homam atmosphere although strictly as game mechanics go it was pretty good.
I think Fortress or Stronghold for the theme. For Meee 3 was definately the peak, countless hours lost on this. 4 was a good game in it's own right, but not as a sequel to HoMM 3. Didn't play 5 enough to make a judgement on it. I still remember when I was a lil kid about to go to sleep, but I saw dad run HoMM 1 for the first time. Neither of us had any idea what was it about (nor did we know enough english to read it up ), but man was it awesome. Gryphons seemed like the strongest unit in the game on The Claw.
