Zerg help for a newb

Hey guys, first post, new to the forum :)
I played sc1 so often(protoss always), never dedicated, more of a social player so I do have basic star craft knowledge. I just started playing starcraft 2 beta, I am trying to play with the zerg as I just enjoy playing with them. I have been playing against my brother who has been playing the beta a bit longer and just demolishes me everytime with a army of marines, mauraders, thors, and the healing aircrafts that heal the marines.

    My usual strategy has been
(3drones per mineral field 3 per gas.)
10 drones first then 1 overlord
    More drones then 1 gas
    6 zerglings 1 overlord 1 queens
    more drones then new hatchery
Roach den with 6 roaches coming and another queen
Evolution chamber followed by a hydra den
THen usually have a army of about 15roaches and 20 hydras
Ill usually at this point fight against his army of marines, mauraders, thors, and heavacs(i think)
    And i get raped.

I tried to read the zerg strategy thread on the first page and don't understand what those strategies mean with numbers like 10 pool or 26/26 overlord... I don't know the lingo yet..

Please help me, thank you :D

The first thing you want to know is the "lingo", it illustrates your supply. 10/10 overlord therefore means you have ten drones and ten supply. a 26/26 overlord is when you have three overlords and 26 supplies worth of units.
You only need 2 drones per mineral field, with 3 drones on gas. Building too many drones will hurt the zerg players unit production more than it will hurt terran and protoss. When do you get your spawning pool. (the thing that enables zerglings)? getting it at 14 is normal, while you can do a ten pool to a early and aggresive attack against other zerg and protoss. (terran usually wall off, check that. If they do not wall off, terran is the easiest race to rush.
Getting an expansion early is often a good idea, if you think you can defend it.
Remember to use the Queens spawn larvae ability, as it enables over 2 times the production of a normal hatchery.

I see. What about in regards to units, what is the best way to counter that attack of marines, mauraders, thors, and heavacs. I tried to go roaches and hyrdras, but the thors just obliterate my hydras. The thors give me way too much problems.

One strat, likely not the best one since I'm still learning, would be to burrow move to get the roaches nice and close.

Cracklings + Hydra's (cracklings taking the initial brunt) followed by roaches popping up literally under the force should be fine.

You can always bait as well. Burrow your lings (banelings as well prolly work better) and roaches, and pull back your hydra's. Pop up as the force is pushing in then bring the hydra's back in. If you're attacking and the one pushing them, you're going to lose more units while they are all trying to get in range.

I never meet a tough force head on, without another force pushing their base. A lot of times, it'll cause them to retreat or they'll split their units. I've never had too much of a problem with Terran so much as Zerg so Idk. You should have no problem overwhelming. From reading these forums, I've learned most of the losses are due to not expanding (I think its recommended to have one extra expansion over your opponent as Zerg).

I see...thanks for the advice. Quick question. Which battle order do you follow. I get lost trying to understand what people write here. 10 drones, 1 over lord, and then another hatchery or a spawning pool. I dont know in what order to get the second hatchery, get the queen, and the spawning pool.

I would watch some of FFenix's livestreams. He plays Zerg primarily.

GREAT!! thanks for the heads up. I will do that. Also can anyone give me like a standard battle order guideline that doesn't rely on rushing in the beginning

We should probably if we don't already start compiling some Stickied topics for beginners who come looking for build orders. Personally I haven't browsed all of the forums but I know a quick FAQ sticky would be quite nice to see.
