^ Which means that it isn't total crap like in Science. A magazine that tends to take back about half their published stuff within a couple of weeks. This Dutch magazine is published by a decent university, not some commercial magazine that goes for profit and thus publishes everything that sounds exciting.

I'm not sure, but I think it was a bit of both.
Didn't care for the details anyway, since I don't believe in that whole doom scenario anyway, which was the only thing that made that calendar interesting.

And ffs people, it's space junk. Say some crazy stuff. Those calculation things are for real, but at least make fun of the 2012 movie. xD

I watched an American TV magazine which talked about this future event. They said on this day 21/12/2012 Earth, The Sun and the middle of the gamaxy will be perfectly aligned. And this phenomenon will provoke the end of everything because the magnetic poles will get inversed. And cataclysms will happen

If just this even happens ... we can expect something bad to happen. But will this hapen ? No one knows !

Actually, the earth's poles switch every couple millennia. It shows in the direction certain minerals are facing in hardened lava streams. It was on discovery a while ago. The next pole switch is already few thousand years late. Further, I'm not all that worried about changing poles. It would merely mess up all navigation tools. And it's not like gravity will be inverted or something, lol.

What would be a problem is the total disappearing of the magnetic field. That would suck, since it's protecting up from all sorts of nasty radiation. Losing it would terminate all life. Now that's a doom scenario.

Small correction: It wont provoke ****. The fact that we align together has no effect on earth whatsoever. Perhaps for astrologists but as far as non-pseudo science goes we are safe.

Oh and polar reversal will be a significant inconvenience when it happens (which is not anywhere near 2012) but hardly a world ending event.

That's true, but we'd have to have really bad weather already for that to happen, and it hardly qualifies as world ending.

    @Higgs
It's pretty much impossible to predict when the magnetic poles are going to change, so I'd like to see your source. The only thing we have to predict it is when it happened in the past. And if you would use that data, then it's already overdue. And I'm not going to quote anything. Just watch discovery sometimes, or google before saying stupid things. Sorry man, but it is kinda stupid.

What exactly is? Saying that there is no good reason to think that the poles are going to swap on december 2012? Or that the aligning 'thing' will have no measurable effect on earth?

ijffdrie: Waves? As in waves in the sea? No. It won't. The meteor clouds which we anually orbit through have bigger effect on waves than this.

You said "which is not anywhere near 2012". You can't know that. It could happen tomorrow, without anybody knowing beforehand. You'll know when it's happening, though. Polar light everywhere. Duh.

As for those waves being influenced: even the moon aligning with the sun and earth has a bigger effect then usual. Also, this is space junk, and that posts was made by ijffdrie. Connect the dots. ;)

The thing is Higgs, they have no source besides their "interpretation" or holy **** Nostradamus predicted it!

People really don't ask for any evidence or anything these days, they just see it on the internet, the media, or in a book and believe it instead of asking questions or actually thinking about the material.

The same thing goes with religion a lot of people only know a small amount of their doctrine but claim they swear their lives by it.

i wasnt talking about a very big effect, but as far as i know

sun and moon on one side: excellent surfing
sun and moon and galaxy on one side: even better surfing

Uhm no I actually watched Phil Plaits calculation of the event on TAM 7 and he got some ridicilously small number (as in 10^-20 of moons gravitational pull on earth) same goes for Neil Tyson. The only boost youll get is going to be the placebo effect for the deluded people.

you know I admit that when I heard for the first time that the Apocalypse will happen in 2012 I was very sad. Because I wondered that I will not get enough time to play with SC2 !! That's why I was so impatient for the release of the game ! Because I wanted to enjoy this game as long as possible before that even comes !!

    :D

    EDIT :

The Mayans have created this calendar and this one predicts the end of the universe according to them. How has this civilisation disappeared ? How have they disappeared ? By the Conquistadoes ? No, they were in America before their arrival.
So how ? I'll tell you. The Mayans knew that their calendar had an end. So according to scientists (sorry, no source of that :( ) knowing they had an end to their History theu decided to commit suicide together !! I hardly summerize what I am writing, but that's mainly what happened to them.

SOGEKING is that steaming pile of **** youve just dumbed here a joke or are you serious? I dont even know where to begin refuting this. It's fractually wrong.
"the end of the universe according to them."
[citation needed] - I haven't found any reliable source that supports that. It's simply end of one cycle and beginning of a new one. It's time for celebration for the mayans if anything.
And where did you get that they comited mass suicide? Did you think that may be good reason why there is no source of that avalible? Usually these civilizations simply break down over time due to disease, genetic degredation or because of other civilizations colliding with them (the spanish come in mind). Nothing supernatural here.

The Mayans died because they hadn't build up any sort of resistance to the plague. When the Spanish came in contact with them, it spread crazy fast.

And stop being such an asshole, Higs.
