I don't know what will happen at that year but I read some news that a solar storm will be coming to earth at 2010 or 2011 and an asteroid is heading for earth and will roughly hit earth at 2014.

probably just a hoax ( a solar storm, what is that actually, i cant imagine a space storm(no oxygen and stuff) and i dont think a storm on the sun can hit us)

Well, it isn't literally a storm. And it is not a hoax coz it has been televised at discovery channel too.

A solar storm is caused by solar flares, which is a violent explosion in the solar corona. Well, basically these explosions creates massive amounts of radiation and shoots this radiation outwards by solar wind. The solar wind eventually travels through space, reaching other planets.

Now in this case, one is heading towards earth right now. Solar storms' effect on earth can be devastating. Some parts of the Earth would heat up so bad, electric transformers will explode, causing severe blackouts. You can google to know more about it coz that's all I can say.

About the asteroid, I just read it in our school journal so I didn't believe it entirely.

i dont think one short burst of radiation over such distance could damage that much, i know solar radiation can damage people miles away, but a solar burst only takes a few minutes and i dont think much radiation can come from that, maybe as much as tsjernobyl, causing a couple of mutations and dead children, but nothing near hiroshima

Its energy is 6.298 × 10^25 Joules. And radiations as much as hiroshima and nagasaki is always occuring in space. We don't receive that much radiation when we are here due to the earth's magnetic field.

The Earth's magnetic field blocks out solar radiation and preventing radiation coming in. The Earth's magnetic field at the poles are weak so there are more radiation coming in to the poles. That explains why there are auroras at the poles.

If massive amounts of solar radiation reaches Earth, some of it will breach through the magnetic field.

EDIT: Oh yeah. I got those info about solar storms here:

The chances are little, 'cause HP has little to no value. Sure it reads easily and is fun, but it's not good enough to be in schools imo. Tolkien has far better chances (we actually had Hobbit in school). Sapkowski and Lem also could make it somehow

Yea, I said HP cuz with there being so damn many of them, you know at least ONE is going to survive for the next 1000 years, and hell, depending how much of our stuff is still around then, they might just use it. I'd much prefer Tolkien to be studied though.

The only way something like this is going to happen is if internet or large part of it is destroyed or changed to something else without extracting the data from it. It's just too big to vanish just like that. Though it's possible that due to nuclear war or some other mass destruction we'll have to resort to look for hard copies of books.

As for ozone layer, I think it's directly connected to greenhouse effect and may be the cause of flood (melting ice caps)

Yes global warming is one of the things that may endanger the world visciosly. The balance of nature is being thrown off balance and the world is trying to stabalize itself but it can't due to our interfeering with the nature of things. I will add it to the list and WW3 as well.

WWIII + nuclear winter = definite change in society as we know it. My poor SC2 history will be cut short.

Can't imagine how cold nuclear winter would be. Any guesses? Like -50 Celsius?

    umm... I think its C = F(5/9) +32 or C =F(9/5) + 32

    so 4.2 C or -58

Can't remember which formula it is, I always got confused, srry.
