I am interested to hear your reasons. I guess you could argue from an economic point of view that they don't have children so they detract from the future growth...
Haven't really been following this too closely, but I don't agree with people saying that a marriage is a religious ceremony. It's a social ceremony. It definitely can take place as a religious ceremony, but that doesn't mean it is one.
I can supply some, but you didn't answer the question. Do you seriously believe that there is no reason other than religion for believing that homosexuality is wrong? (And I don't think many people would really buy that economic argument you have there).
People who are not catholic can get married too (even in a church, just without the catholic ceremony), so you're right. Marriage is social now days, not purely religious.
I didn't know the question was directed at me...but yes I see no reason to view homosexuality as wrong (In relation to the physical world and observation)...religion doesn't really consider it to be "wrong" since religion is such massive field of psychological study and relies on interpretation. However yes Organised religions on the whole does consider it to be “wrong” . The economic thing was basically me saying that any other argument regarding homosexuality being wrong is really very general even if it is true. However these things are personal perspectives, so like religion neither side can argue of who is right or wrong due to the fact that viewing something as wrong is purely an individuals point of view. Yet when reasons are put forward which will sway a significant number of people they are fun to argue about xD . I guess a definition of what you define as wrong is called for. But also give your reasons incase I have to wait a whole day to post again =P.
Three... Fear of people who are gay... Fear of people thinking you are gay... Fear of people discovering you are gay...
The question is itza, why are people fearful of people who are gay? You have listed consequences of people believing it is "wrong", but not reasons.
That wasn't the question! And I'd say that the fear of people thinking they're gay, or discovering they're gay, are, in fact, reasons. If you're completely against something, then you're obviously not likely to be considered as a part of that something, so if you've supported the removal of gay rights, possibly campaigned for their removal, voted for the removal, etc, etc, etc, then people aren't going to think they're gay, regardless of whether they are and just don't want to be outed, or whether they're not but paranoid of people thinking they are. So, do I believe that there is no reason other than religion for believing that homosexuality is wrong? No, I believe that fear is another reason for believing homosexuality is wrong.
Thats just the same old, people who attack gay people are insecure arguement. Which may be correct but it doesn't answer why people fundamentally think its wrong. Sure theres people that you just mentioned but they don't believe its wrong, they just want to show others how much they dislike them. But why is there the hatred in the first place? And it was the question just worded in a different way so that its in relation to what you said (Why are people afraid of homosexuality "because they believe it is wrong" . Why do they believe its wrong?)... But i guess you are only doing 2 unit english for the HSC =P. j/k xD
Lawl! And who was it who wanted to drop down to 2 unit? But yeah, I haven't been following this extremely closely, so I just responded to that specifically. Sorry I didn't research it extensively like all of you HSIE'ers! But seriously, why can't their fear be a reason believing it's wrong? Sure, it's completely irrational, but since when was homophobic rational?
Fun to argue about is usually what motivates me to post in these sorts of forums. Pretty much everybody who posts in video game forums is either a teenager, who think they know everything, or someone older than a teenager, who think they know everything and that teenagers don't. We're probably never going to persuade anyone of anything. With that little sidebar out of the way, my thoughts or opinions or whatever... I'll first point out that I'm not against homosexuals and have no problem with them. I'm against homosexuality, which leads to me generally being against homosexual marriage (although the jury's still out on that one). This is the case for many religious people, though I won't presume to speak for all of them. It's important to differentiate this position from the "I hate gays" position that some people have. The idea that the only reason to hate homosexuality is fear is silly. It's such an American idea: Basically, the only reason anyone won't like you is because they're afraid or they're jealous. Anyways, I don't think that all 3-4 billion people who belong to a religion that officially believes homosexuality is wrong are secretly either afraid or gay. There is the argument that homosexuality in humans is unnatural. Not a great argument, but it works for some people. There is the argument that homosexuality is an unhealthy lifestyle. That one at least has articles and stats from the various centres for disease control to back them up. Statistically, it's as unhealthy to be homosexual as it is to be a syringe drug user. Some people just think homosexuality is disgusting. To each their own. But most people make up their minds about an issue like this long before they actually go and find reasons to back them up.
Luckily for me, today in health class, we had a visitor. He was a homosexual man who had AIDS. Let me tell you, he doesn't seem much different than any of us besides having HIV and AIDS. He told the class about his life and it was sad. He was adopted, he had a girlfriend in high school for all four years. He was voted most popular kid in elementary and high school(omg...I could never be like him...). He was a pretty cool guy. I mean he got a partner three times with three different men. But that was because the first two died of an opportunistic infection (they had AIDS also.) The third one he said he lives with right now and they are both very happy together. The thing they wanted was to be accepted in the community. The people in the neighborhood were fine with them being a gay couple. His doctors had said twice, a few years a apart, that he was going to die of the infections, diseases, and his cancer. Yes, he had stage 4 cancer somewhere, i forgot where, and he said he had leukemia. But he told us instead of giving up and admitting defeat, he went out and tried to be as optimistic as he could. He tried to do as many things as possible. Both times, he underwent clinical trials and survived. He came to our school risking his life from getting an infection, which had already happened once, to talk to us about his life and how AIDS affected him. He told us some things he hadn't even told his family yet, like getting a girl pregnant at 14. He is very educated, seems very normal, and is just like us. What does this teach us? I don't know, but it's something good. Homosexuals are just like us regular people, if there wasn't religion, maybe this issue wouldn't have come up. I saw on the news that Mormons paid a lot for the Yes on 8 ads. Like this famous quote says, "Die, monster! You don't belong in this world!" "It is not by my hand that I am once again given flesh. I was brought here by humans who wish to pay me tribute. " "Tribute? You steal men's souls and make them your slaves!" "Perhaps the same could be said of all religions..." It goes on to an even more epic part, but i didn't want to bore you guys with that So, it's usually religion that prevents us from accepting homosexuals. While they are different from us, we have more similarities than differences.
Nice, but it's not that they're just like regular people, they are regular people. Nice story, nonetheless.
And yet they were just as persecuted as the Jews were in the USSR, where religion was outlawed. I suppose this just means that atheism is a religion then. Remember, though, that most religious people have no problem with homosexuals; it's the homosexuality that's the problem. "Hate the sin, love the sinner" is the catchphrase.
